WOW!!! I didn't expect such a response! Thank you for all of your comments. I don't have lots of time to train a dog right now...I was hoping for a rescue dog, but I think that no dog may be the best option at this point.

I wouldn't give up on dogs completely. My blind, deaf sheltie never harms our birds. She hardly even notices them! (Incidentally...she's not old. She was born this way.)
