So I am wondering how many of us urban BYC'ers get this response... Well... at first I was reluctant to talk about getting chicken's. Most people I know I assumed would turn up their noses at our new project, the rest I thought would think we were CRAZY! But while I did get those responses from a few people that are either too old fashioned and small minded to see the positive side of this (my "mother in law") or too snobby and snotty to think it would ever be worth having to deal with chicken poop (a friend) the rest of the people I know had VERY positive and different responses. My boss's want egg's, my mother want's eggs, my grand mother ...well she just shook her head she went through a LOT of crazy animals with me when I was growing up. My aunt applauds my effort's my cousins are all too prissy to think anything about my chickens and that's fine with me. For the most part, as soon as I said "were going to raise our own chickens" People started putting in order's for eggs.....

ummm.... I'm not usually a greedy person.... but I kinda wanted to tell them.....

Back off man.... those are MINE!

Any body else get this? Will people keep expecting to get my egg's? Will I always want to horde them like a greedy egg hoarder?

I mean MAN.... the chicks are ONLY 3 weeks old!!!

No one ever mentioned my eggs except for my dh's boss. He's an older man who was raised in the country. He says there's no better eggs than "yard eggs." My only laying hens up until now have all laid green eggs so my mom won't eat them. That's fine, I'll keep sharing with my dh's boss.

The first carton of eggs that I SOLD, re-read that dear, S-O-L-D, was very eggciting!

you get over the egg hoarding after a while. I have 24 hens and there is only so much pound cake my family will eat...they try with diligence, but still.
I gave them away at first, and those that I gave eggs to have never offered to buy any. ...so I am not offering to give them any more. I do give out eggs to new people by saying,"the first dozen are free so you will know they are worth the price, after that they are $3.00 a dozen.'' I have one lady who buys five dozen every other week.

I have one snooty neighbor that called code enforcement on us when she found out we have chickens, our chickens are seven miles away from our home

, but guess who didn't get any eggs?

Everyone else thinks it is wonderful!

We told our one neighbor what we were doing (getting chicks) & offered her all the eggs she wanted (as a bribe). She said thanks but no thanks. She doesn't eat eggs! She is looking forward to when we put our girls outside though. And everybody else thinks we're a little crazy.

My mom is pretty excited about getting some eggs. When she told my brother about the chickens he asked if I was going to use some for meat, and kill them myself. Then he said "I'd pay to see that!"

lol My father in law calls us animal hoarders. I told him now that I'm selling hatching eggs and keets he can't say that anymore...Now we're not hoarders, It's a farm!

(not like 30 chickens is hoarding anyway, he's just kinda prissy) Funny thing though, none of them asked for eggs!

My mom has a jewelry stand and there's a food court there. One day they had some empty egg cartons sitting on the counter and mom asked if she could have them for me. They gave them to her. Now they give her about a dozen a week, so she has promised them some of my eggs too. I don't mind at all....it saves me from buying cartons.

Once you start getting a lot of eggs you'll want to share!

i have the same problem with people claiming eggs already. i'm only getting 6 chickens. so how am i supposed to hand out all these eggs and have any for myself? maybe i'll tell them they are brown egg layers. alot of people around here WILL not eat brown eggs, even though they taste the same as white. i think that's what i'm gonna do.

Don't feel bad about not wanting to give away the eggs; I feel the same way and only give away eggs when I have way too many. And then I only give them to family. If you think this situation is bad try being a deer hunter and chicken owner. I have people asking for free eggs and deer meat! It amazes me that each year when hunting season comes in that people who barely know me will put in their orders for deer meat and never offer to give anything in return. Now, don't get me wrong I believe in helping out the fellow man but when these people don't even speak to me until September when they know I will be getting geared up for hunting. That is just wrong in my book.

Similar to my latest venture into beekeeping. When I purchase my first package of bees an in law was all excited about how we'd be able to go out and get fresh honey. They made it sound like you just open the top of the hive and scoop out handfuls of honey. I know that the bees do almost all of the work but there is work and expenses involved just like in every endeavor that we under take.

Luckily my family likes fresh eggs and my friends are chomping at the bit to buy them from me.

i had origanaly planed on getting 5 hens .......... so many people came and said they would love eggs from my hens AND they would even PAY me for them!!!! i got 18

they are all chick enablers....some time i think they are hover like vultures waiting for the first egg to come! i may get mobbed when the chicks start laying
