NOT using Wood shavings, what do you use?

Nothing will change my mind (and if anyone wants it when it's ready, come on over) but I am curious why the Raising Chickens for Dummies book (written by the founder of this site) says specifically to NOT put chicken poop, even composted, on veggie/fruit gardens. Maybe for liability.

I'm sure that's true of a lot of people. I have diagnosed anxiety and germs are one of my phobias so for me, it's a huge step just having the chickens at all. I don't need to obsess over and over about the specific things that worry me and our garden has done fine so far without chicken poop, so I think we'll be fine. We're only growing enough for a family of 5.

Believe me, I worry about plenty of other things as well.

I am currently using timothy hay, I bought a bale thinking my rabbit would eat it, I was wrong so I used it for the coop. It has been about a month and I just turn it weekly. I plan to use it in the compost and in the garden bed once I till it up. We are going super veggie next year, lots of big plans for next year
