Wow he is beautiful!

But, I do think he only had one barred parent. He's WAY too dark to be homozygous barred (have two barred parents).

If you take one of your lighter chicks and keep him as a breeding roo, you should get all barred babies, correct with the females darker and males lighter.

I'd love to see pics of the babies when the feather out!

This is them now with half feathers! The two black ones are at the top near foster mom
I would try and get individual pics but mom is being very very protective!

I see 3 barred chicks that are boys and 2 barred chicks that are girls. The barring gene is dominant and can easily show up in a mixed breed bird. A black Australorp and Barred rock could make one like your rooster. Your rooster is a mixed breed and is too dark to be a full blooded BR. He's very handsome!

Wow, ask and ye shall receive!

The solid chicks are female.
The lighter chicks are male.
The darker barred chicks could be either male or female with this particular cross. They could be females that got the barring from the sire, or males that got the barring from the dam. You'll just have to wait it out.

I love broody hens, they're so watchful and protective! Beats raising them in a brooder by far.

Yes, broody hens are awesome. I just gave this hen some eggs n she has done the rdst. Though she gets very angry if you try and pick up the chicks.
It will be interesting to see who turns out to be what.
The one on the right in the pic actually looks darker in real life so we shall see.
I will let you know the outcome
Thanks for the help!

that looks like a black sex link not only is his coloring wrong but also his legs are white. if you want some pure barred rocks i would sell him and get another rooster that looks like this

(6 month old cockerel)

Yes. Judging from his chicks i agree i think he is a sexlink!
His legs are yellow but very pale compared to my hens!
I will update the post when i figure out the sexes of the chicks
