So last night I got home from work, and had to finish up the brooder. 9 chicks had grown from fluffy marshmallows to 9 big chicks in a suprisingly short time and the green tub was NOT enough space. I saw a dark shape move in the shadows near the coop so I went over to investigate. I guess one of my BR pullets heard me coming and jumped down from the perch (remember it's dark night out) and ran out to meet me. She immediately jumped into "the squat" position when I got near her.
I laughed, picked her up and said, "Listen little pullet. I'm honored you'd run out and meet me 'at the door' so to speak, but I really hope you don't do that for every stranger that comes near your door!"
I patted her head, scratched her feathers, gave her some scratch and put her back up on the perch. The other hens knew something was up and jumped off their perches too... So I had to turn on the light and give them all more food, which they ate and then went back to roosting... It was like a midnight buffet and they were all pleasently plump in the morning.
I just wonder about that pullet...
