November 2016 Hatch-a-long!!

Yay, I am glad everyone is doing well! I have so many pictures, and I was getting ready to post some, and I realized most of them are of my October chicks, not my November chicks! Lol I need to get some of the November ones, but half of them are usually hiding under the hay tarp. I do have the 6 from inside, and they are beautiful! They are still separated from the rest of the flock, simply because we keep forgetting to move them to the coop at night. They are really getting colorful.

The six raised inside.

The three smallest here are from the second Brahma. The others are from October, except the hen.

If you want to get a good chicken pic, call the chicken & hold a piece of bread next to the camera.
Getting down to their eye level also helps.

Lol Yeah, treats would possibly help, but I am not sure because it is the young ones that won't hold still. They do not want us getting to close, so they take off. I am going to try this next time, see if they stay put.

I normally use treats when taking pics, so when the adult chickens see a camera, they come running.

When chicks are 1 day old, you can just put them in something - like a flower pot & take cute pics easily

When they're over 2 days old, I must hold them in one hand & take pics with the other.

See my hand? That can be cropped out

If you're taking group pics of chicks between age 2wks & 20 weeks, you may need help. One person to handle the camera & another to contain the chicks. LOL

PLEASE HELP, My eggs usually start to pipe and hatch on the 18th day and now this batch is very slow they are still alive but it's day 20 and no pipes. I've been thinking the air cells look a little small. What can I do?? I can't loose this batch it's one of my bigger ones.

I think you might have had your heat on the high side if they've been hatching on the 18th day. They normally start pipping on the 20th day (unless you're talking about quail?). Then hatch on day 21, 22, on up to 24 I think is safe.

My temps were a little low this last hatch and my first pip was LATE on day 20, the first check hatched day 21, the bulk hatched on day 22, last one hatched day 23.

I agree that your past temps may have been on the high side. At this point it's best to maintain proper temp/humidity until they hatch. Mine usually show 1st pips on day 20. Sometimes an early one hatches late day 20, but most arrive day 21-22. The one time I had a late hatch (didn't pip until day 21) it was during a cold period. The hatching eggs were being collected when there was still snow on the ground. It could have also been the temp setting on my incubator since it was my 1st hatch of the year.

Awe, I love seeing "cute" pictures!! However, that is too much work for me! LOL Most of our flock was raised inside, and I spend the majority of my time outside with my animals, so they hang out with me like we are all buddies. I always have my phone on me and take thousands of pictures, but I go for the natural look and behaviors. The ones that don't cooperate are the young ones raised outside by broodies. They do learn eventually not to be afraid of us, but it always takes a few months at least. I have tried getting up close pictures having someone else hold them for me, but they squirm and cry so I gave that up. Lol! However, if I go out at the right times and they are in the hen house on roosts, or have gone in to roost for the night, I can usually get the camera right up close and get some good shots.
