November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I did have an egg that was messy when I got it. I cleaned it up and it started to ooze a little a few days later. I candled it and it turned out to be rotten. Well I didn't know it was rotten until I accidentally tapped it and it popped open (thankfully in a plastic baggie). Does it smell?

It doesn't smell. I know it may be as old as a week, I got the email Saturday that the hens had only had 3-4 eggs in the previous 3 days. Do you think it might be safe to leave it for a few days? I can candle them on day 4 to see if there's development. Last time, I waited until day 7, but I haven't had oozers before!

Honestly, I would wait a few days and see. But that's me. The curiosity would get to me lol I think this one is a judgement call. Mine didn't smell rotten at all at first. Later it smelled faintly like ammonia which is why I didn't realize it was rotten until it popped open. I expected a 'rotten egg' smell.

Yay! I'll let it stew a bit. ;) There may be a couple others from the darker eggs. I had thought that I had managed to miss drying a couple and dabbed the clear fluid (water? albumin?), then this one continued to seep - letting it dry on there is when it hardened and turned slightly yellow. Hopefully, if there is another, I can identify it before it's too late!

Don't forget the updates

I'm really curious how it turns out. Mine had distinctly yellowish and smelly ooze on it but when I wiped it off the egg didn't smell and I wasn't sure if it even came from that particular egg until later. Keep an eye out for sudden blackening inside. I didn't know what it meant, I just knew it wasn't normal or right so I took the egg out. Thank goodness for this forum or I wouldn't have thought to put it in a plastic baggie before putting it in the garbage can. That would've been quite the surprise

I meant Antiquity's new baby. The one next to it was almost climbing out of it's little basket in with the newly hatched one. Lock down isn't till the 11th for me with 9 eggs still going strong.

I'm watching it on youtube with no sound because my baby felt the need to chirp right along with it!
Oh.... lol

Oh that is so awesome! :p

I think after I build my new incubator I'm going to try a hatch-along where we all set eggs on the same day and livestream to each other. There's got to be some interest in that. I would love to see chicks responding :D
That would be a cool thing to do for an Easter hatch.....lol

We had a bit of a surprise today! My legbars are not legbars. They're adorable but the price I paid for mixes has me a bit irritated. The eggs were pretty bright blue, but of the three that have hatched they have silkie features! Two have the extra toes, two have the black skin, the third looks like a possible Easter Egger. One more of those to go. It'll be interesting to see what comes out of it. I have one of the silkie mixes in my armpit in bed lol. Had to help it out of its shell a little and it's such a snuggle little guy! All 10 of the lavender orpingtons are out and healthy as well! They're so cute!!

Bummer on the legbars

Sorry about the Legbars and congrats on the Orpingtons. Please post some pics!
Next time you need Legbar eggs, let me know. I currently have 1 that lays but will have a second one laying in 2-3 weeks.

OK, I looked to see who gave me the first humidity advice and I haven't had enough coffee for the patience so, up at 4 this morning to let my elderly dog out and checked the bator, still at 60% so I took the cloth in it and pulled it up to the top edges of the bowl and rechecked at 7am, it's holding at 65% so whoever gave me that advise THANK YOU. There is some condensation in the corners of the top glass but I can live with that. No dripping and I can see inside.

When I candled the eggs yesterday, everyone still had a bit of room to fill in the shells so I don't believe I will see any day 20 pipping like many of you have been having. Everyone was still moving and the eggs are still rocking. Knowing me I will go in and talk to them and suggest what a great idea it would be to hatch by day 21 and not 22 or 23 like in my last bater.

Okay, this is my first time hatching. I've got five eggs under my silkie. I set them at 6:00 p.m. on October 16th, today is th 21st day....I think. I am wondering if I should be hearing or seeing anything at this point? I haven't messed with the eggs since Friday, as I didn't want to cause any damage. I'm at work right now....so will check her tonight when I get home. BUT, I'm hoping to have some babies soon!!!
