November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Okay, this is my first time hatching. I've got five eggs under my silkie. I set them at 6:00 p.m. on October 16th, today is th 21st day....I think. I am wondering if I should be hearing or seeing anything at this point? I haven't messed with the eggs since Friday, as I didn't want to cause any damage. I'm at work right now....so will check her tonight when I get home. BUT, I'm hoping to have some babies soon!!!
Hi whether or not you have any chicks tonight, you should not lift her until Day 22 is complete which will be 6:00 PM tomorrow. If there are chicks they will come out for you to see, but if there are pips, you run the risk of drying up their membranes. I usually put towels soaked with hot water around the nesting area walls on Day 21, to get some extra boost of humidity. But again my broody is inside on Day 21 with dry heating so that is needed. Maybe not needed in your environment.

If you set them October 16th (same day I set mine) You actually won't start day 21 until 6:00 tonight. So any time now you may hear them peeping, see them rocking or externally pipping. Remember 21 days is just an average, so don't get worried yet and GOOD LUCK on your hatch!

Happy hatching. I would think you will have chicks tonight.

So, here's a little collage of our first 9 hatchers. (#10 just put in his appearance in the bator.) So far so good. My malpositioned hatcher is doing wonderful. I do have one that managed to chip it's bottom beak on something (I believe one of the thermometer,) and has a bit of blood still in its beak, but seems to be pretty spunky despite that. My 9th born, the runt so far has been picked on by someone (probably my bully, ya, I have one) and has a boo boo on top of his head, but he seems to be doing well too.

I have two more that have made small pips and 4 that haven't done anything. We don't start day 21 until 4 tonight, so there's still time for everyone to be on time...lol

The Day you set is your first day. So if you set on October 16th at 4:00 PM, your first day is over (complete) at 4:00 PM on October 17th and so on.
Day one doesn't start until 24 hours after set is what I was taught-you don't count the day you set; so it'd go:
October 16th 4:00 Eggs set
October 17th 4:00-October 18th 4:00 Day One
18th 19th Day Two
19th 20th Three
20th 21st Four

October 31st November 1st Fifteen
Nov 1st 2nd Sixteen
2nd 3rd Seventeen
3rd 4th Eighteen
4th 5th Nineteen
5th 6th Twenty
6th 4:00pm 7th 4:00PM Twenty one
