Can't remember if I posted here or no. But I have 8 silkie eggs, 1 redsexlink/Speckled Sussex egg and 1 speckled sussex egg all due around the 15th. This will be my last hatch for the year then I'll start back up in Feb.

Sustained- The crazy thing is I had never even held a chicken before, probably only saw them when we visited farms and such but if I'm completely honest, birds in general kind of freak me out. Scares me that something with claws and a beak could fly at me. My mom grew up with chickens but my dad is a city boy. It's still strange sometimes that I have chickens but I have always felt that I am a little bit "country" and I really love my sweet girls. My girls do come at me whenever I open the gate up but it doesn't scare me because for 1 they don't really fly (haven't seen any of them try since before they started laying except to get on their roost) and 2 they come after me because they think I'm their momma which is so cute!
The way I ended up with chickens is a funny story. A few years ago my neighbor had said she really wanted chickens but her husband wouldn't let her and she was afraid her dogs would kill them. So then her and I got to talking about sharing chickens and they'd live in my yard. Talked to hubby about it and he nixed the plan. So we forgot about it, some years went by, my neighbor got divorcedand then one morning my hubby went to make our official Sunday breakfast of eggs and bacon and we were OUT of eggs dun, dun, dun!! Hubby says, "we should get some chickens!" Thinking he was joking I said "ya, okkkkk." He texted our neighbor right that second and said lets get chickens, she says yes. Then we start looking at coops and planning things out, hubby and I and our kids go to the feed store to get prices on things we'd need. And guess what... they have baby chicks!! I asked the lady how long she thought she'd have them and she said they'd be gone by the weekend and it was already Thursday. Called neighbor up and told her to bring her kids to the feed store ASAP. And there we were taking 5 chicks home, one for each of our kids minus my baby who wasn't even a year old!!![]()
So back in September we lost 1 of them, which happened to be the chicken of my neighbors daughter who was very upset. We told her we would get her a baby chick when the feed store had them again and she insisted that my baby who is now 1 1/2 yrs needed a chick too. Who could argue with a baby having a baby chick right? So the feed store has chicks again and we have to follow through with what we said. But I have this crazy idea to hatch some fertile eggs we buy locally and my neighbor who is my kinda crazy is along for the ride. We've got it all worked out, we will try to hatch some chicks, but we are also going to let her daughter and mine pick a chick from the feed store at the same time. We figure if we only end up hatching 1 chick at least it'll have some chick friends. So we've got it all planned out but hmmmm.... now how to tell the hubby this is all about to happen!?!?!![]()
Anyway I really can't wait to get started.I am hoping the time will go by quickly since I have a lot on my to do list these days but since I have something to look forward to it will probably go in slow motion.![]()
After my first hatch, I would hear chicken peeping every where. Even when I was driving or sleeping. You got the addiction now! That's a great story lol. I'm jealous. I keep wishing that all my neighbors would jump on the chicken bandwagon too! I think a few houses down someone might have some chicks or chickens still young enough to peep because I hear them from time to time. Could be any kind of bird I suppose and my wishful thinking that it's chicken peeping I hear.![]()

Speaking of chicken math, I just won two gorgeous Rhodebar pullets in an auction and left the auction page open on my computer by mistake. My dear wife saw it before I was able to tell her and she is mad as hell. We were supposed to cut down the number of chicken as we are expecting newborns chicks this weekend. I just could not resist myself. If anyone wants them, we can work something out. PM me!

Lots of people around us have chickens, too. Back when I got my first two hens they would sing an egg song when they laid one, and the neighbors chickens would respond and sing back every time.we have a few people around us with chickens. All of our roosters have crowing wars in the mornings![]()
