November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I think I'm going to have to break down and purchase shipped eggs, I really want to hatch some Polish and Silkies.

I'm hoping to join you in November. My 'bator is currently in lockdown, so I've ordered eggs to be shipped Nov 3. I'm hoping the hens keep laying so my eggs can come! It's the chicken math... My husband was able to start this last batch for the class while I was out of town. Now they're due to hatch and he's out of town, so I ordered some for us so he can be here for a Thanksgiving hatch! But, uh... I didn't tell him yet...

What do you have in lockdown? And what did you order for your thanksgiving hatch?

I would vote for the seramas. No shipping would be too tempting lol Although the bantam mix would be so fun to see what you end up with. Or you could do what I'd do and set seramas, marans, AND the bantam mix

Sounds reasonable! And like a fantastic reason to buy another incubator the surprise aspect is really getting me with the mix! They are all purebred, just a mix of different breeds. Ive only hatched one round so far so the shipping part makes me nervous!

I vote for Copper Marans because they are local. Otherwise, I would have voted for the Bantam mix.
If someone wants hatching eggs,  PM me.
I will have CL x Red Star and CL X RIR and CL x CL eggs for next 2-3 weeks. CL x CL are pullet eggs though.
The CL x Red Star eggs may hatch possible green/olive eggers

I'm kind of thinking marans and seramas may be the solution haha! I'm going in circles with this decision!

Ive got a full bator for November. 3 dozen white Leghorn, 1 dozen barred rock, 2 dozen buff Orpington and 17 rouen. I have another 15 random eggs going in tomorrow polish, easter eggers and glw's. I've got my fingers crossed! Half go to the person who gave me eggs so I'm really hoping they do well. I don't want to dissapoint. Minus ducks I don't want ducks so they are keeping all of those! So 104 all local due the 17th.

Wow... that's really cool. I turned a huge unused toybox we had into a brooder. It never occurred to me to take it a step farther. I may have to give that more thought

Day 10 candling was a bit disappointing. I tossed the remaining Rhodebar eggs. Although I have seen my rooster breeding with the hen on multiple occasions, none of the eggs did anything.

In addition, it appears that out of the 8 Cream Legbar eggs I started with, all but one have died. One is normal, but the others have black spots. Should I give them more time or pull them out now? Below are some photos.

All of my other eggs look awesome, so that must be good news. I'm still bummed about the legbars. The only thing I can think of is that the hens were not mine until the beginning of this month. I started collecting eggs from them right when I got them. While the former owner took care of the birds, perhaps their diet was lacking. The shells seem thinner and more porous than the others. We'll have to try again in a couple of months.

Aww I'm sorry the black splotches are a sign of a bacterial issue, aren't they?

I think you should throw away those Legbar eggs before they blow up.
