November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I know! The week old chicks were still tiny in my eyes until I went to put them together! Now they're "huge"!
Funny how quick our perception can change....lol

I had to toss 5 of my crested cream legbar eggs. Bummer. I think I have one more that quit, but I will wait til Day 14 to make that decision. All 5 of my fertile Rouen eggs are wiggly, but it's so much hard with the CCL eggs. They are so opaque.

Thanks Rachel.

I'm a hopeless case I'm afraid. LOL

I decided to help my chick that has pipped at the wrong end. Just nicked away a tiny piece of shell and made a very small slit in the membrane. Put the egg back in the incubator now.

Chick is cheeping a little bit very occasionally, and I can now also see chick trying to cut away more of the shell itself. Chick wasn't doing that before and I was worried it might suffocate due to pipping so far away from the air cell. I had no idea before candling that there was even a pip as it was located on the underside. I've now also propped up the egg a little on a folded piece of cloth so that any liquid that might be still in the egg is kept away from where the beak obviously is. Just to confirm....this is 7 1/2 hours into day 21 for this egg.

Junibutt....how's things going with your chick??
Sorry I did not read your post till now. Since I did not sleep all night, I decided to take a nap for almost 3 hrs. Woke up, asked my son to help lift the broody and picked up the chick. seems like she had rescued him from the egg shell but the membranes were stuck on his back. So I soaked an eye glass cleaning cloth with hot water and wrapped it in for a few minutes. Then gently and slowly took pieces of membrane off by breaking it. I had to make sure that I did not pull the umbilical cord or the skin in the process. Finally after some 15 minutes, it was membrane free. All it wanted is to snuggle with me so I put it back with mama to dry.

Here are some pics. I think its a girl. She is a CL X RIR

Oh wow I'm SO EGGCited!!!

Ok. I did my Day 8 Candling ( candled day 6... skipped 7 and was planning on culling obvious clears today)

SOOooo... I thought I had no Black/Blue Copper Marans developing... But I have AT LEAST one! I have 5 others that I left in the bator. Two of them I can see ABSOLUTELY nothing (my darkest eggs)... but one of the medium ones I saw movement.. Can't see any veining.. but I caught a glimpse of movement and almost dropped the egg- I was so estatic! I watched for a good minute to make sure I wasn't moving anything and no... it was definite embryo giggling. So I left all Maran eggs in.

My styrofoam Temp Spike on day 5 definitely killed at least one egg. Confirmed with autopsy. All other eggs I removed were completely clear. One other was iffy so I moved it to the Brinsea.

So my Current Developing Tally on SHIPPED EGGS is 16 of 34 Set:

3 Blue Isbars ( with movement)
1 Black/Blue Copper Maran ( with Movement) + 5 others I can't see anything
3 Olive Eggers (Isbar/Maran Crosses)
2 Blue/Black/Splash Jersy Giants ( One with Movement) + 1 Iffy
3 Seramas (2 with Movement)

I kept my two Mutt eggs in the Styrofoam Bator and filled it with sponges in distilled water and have the Humidilty to about 70-75% and Locked Her Down... Only have seen movement from inside one of the two... so I'm kinda nervous about a solo chick. We shall see in the next few days. Day 21 is Wednesday.
