November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Just candled my eggs, they're at day 13 and most of them look pretty good! It looks like 20 out of 24 are going to make it to the lockdown! 2 look infertile and 2 look like they quit around day 5. What's the best way to dispose of the bad eggs? (We don't have WM so just throwing them away means they'll be rotting in the back of the truck for a couple weeks)

I crack mine in the sink for inspection and then turn on the garbage disposal. Flushing would work after cracking if no disposal.

I live in the country so we just run out to the woods and chunk them as far as we can but if I couldn't do that I believe I'd put them in a big ziplock or a couple plastic grocery bags till trash day.

I've got 6 Welsummer over EE that are due 11/10. They're super thick blue and green and really hard to candle, I've even tried 2 flashlights and there's definitely some growth going on but I can't see movement. I'm going to have to really keep an eye on these after lock down, I'm worried they'll have a hard time with that shell.
There's also 2 Welsummer over Welsummer/Australorp due the 10th as well. I'm really excited about these! These are a combo of the fav roo, Cleatus, and, Nugget, who I hand raised after her brothers and sisters were slaughtered by a lost dog. She still hasn't adjusted to flock life yet but just started laying so I'm super excited that he took a shine to her and there's movement in her eggs!
Then yesterday I set 3 more for the 22nd, they're Welsummer. Hoping these give me another couple big boys like their daddy!
Good luck ya'll!!

I crack mine in a bowl, unless they stink... I bury those.
Can you tell if they stink before you crack them?? Sorry, I've never had a rotten egg...my husband came across one and it exploded on him. Some even got in his eye, it was swollen for nearly a week. Since then, I candle every 4 days or so. Once I'm sure they're clear or I get a blood ring then out they go.

Honestly, I've never had one either. I've heard the really bad ones will stink from inside the shell and you can smell it, or they'll weep and stinky egg will seep out of the shell.

I candle mine far too often. Any sign of a blood ring and out they go. Otherwise anything that hasn't developed by day 7 is removed and anything that isn't moving or as big as it should be on day 14 is tossed. I find with these general rules they just don't have time to get stinky anyway, and I crack all of mine indoors.

But IF I ever have one stink inside the shell or if there are some I'm just iffy about, or if I just don't care to crack and inspect, they go into the hole and get buried. It's a plan that's worked for me so far... >_> I know it's going to come back to bite me eventually...

I just had a semi-rotten one more or less break in my hand yesterday. It did not explode, and it wasn't completely nasty, but I hopefully won't have one break in the house again. The others I took out in the woods next to the house and broke them open. They were day 14 eggs that had quit around day 8. If you can't chuck yours in the woods put them in a ziplock bag before dumping in the trash.
