November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I just hatched 2 more eggs from my Frizzle Hen... hoping for more frizzles! I got one already and it is adorable.. it may be a roo, we'll see! My duck eggs have about 11 days to go and all ten look good! I found a kiddy pool at my neighbors house when they moved out so I will try to use that for a brooder. I really want to better socialize this bunch because our first ducks are still terrified of us... buggers! The ducklings my duck is raising are more relaxed, fortunately.
I want a frizzle!!! lol Congrats on the newbies1

Wow that's a nice incubator! I'd love to have one with that kind of capacity but I'm not certain I could sell that many chicks. When I have more land I may give it a try lol if they don't sell I would have one happy freezer and crockpot
Yeah, i love it!! I hope all works out!! I already ahve people that are asking for part of the first hatch!!

Ok, well... I was very very naughty today.

First I didn't get any pictures of the two little fluffers, but on top of that...

I water candled my remaining eggs.

I was so worried that most of them were dead, but the good news is that all but 1 or 2 wiggled so....

So here I am, late on day 20 with no pips, no known internal pips (although some intrusion into the air cells) but possibly some living eggs, assuming I didn't just kill them by dunking them in a bowl of warmish water.

Don't follow my example. I mess everything up.
I'll do my penance by getting the camera on those chickies.

I know the feeling but have so far managed to restrain myself somehow. I did float test my quail just now because they're 2 days overdue. I've been trying to just keep waiting patiently but I couldn't take the suspense anymore. I was afraid I had killed them off somehow.

Congrats on both counts!!

That's awesome! I'd love to be able to at least support my hatching habit by selling chicks lol

I'm the one trying to hatch 3 green eggs in the tiny incubator, in a cold house near winter. I candled today (day 7) and could only see the air bubble line and the yolk in the egg. The shell is just too dark to be able to tell anything else with my little flashlight. Its the same photo, Except for the fact that i tossed out the worthless thermometer that came with the incubator it looks the same. I think the hatch has failed but plan to incubate until I'm sure. I'll let you all know how things are going this time next week. It is just so hard to keep the temp's where I need them when the temps in the house fluctuate so much throughout the day. I was happy to see that the little 7 watt light bulb can keep the temperatures up with some insulation surrounding the bator so i plan to get a Styrofoam container and try again in the spring with locally purchased eggs. I'd buy some now online except it is already too cold to ship eggs and i have seen how the local post office handles packages.
I forgot what day you're on, but know how hard it is to candle some of these. I've got blue, brown (Maran) and green in mine. I ended up getting a mini Maglite. It's very bright, but I still have trouble seeing the air cells in the first few days if it's not rolling. Funny how the moving air cell is easier to spot. I'm hoping the extra insulation works - after all, the regular basic models are often styrofoam. If it fits in one of those cheap picnic coolers, that might work great. The thermometer in the pic doesn't look useful in that position, but a more reliable one would be better. Good thing is that it's small enough that it's hard to break the bank filling it. Problem that some of these eggs are spendy! Here's hoping one has managed to pull through.

I'm going to go blind staring at these eggs! I knelt down and looked in the front window and saw a second egg had pipped around 11pm. That little sucker pipped on the bottom toward the back and the only reason I know she pipped is because I saw the pieces of shell on the floor!

So now I have two pipped, one I can't see the hole but looks like it will hatch first and the first one that pipped that only wiggled once for me since it pipped so I know it's not dead.

Thank you so much for the baby pics, especially the one with the white booty, so adorable!

I'm going to go blind, too. But more because I just realised that for some reason, I put a day-glo bulb in the incubator, so I've been staring into a UVA filled incubator for three weeks. /facepalm

As for the pics, you're so, so very welcome. :) The little stinkers look like teeny-tiny penguins when you hold them up and look at them from the front.

Third egg is pipped!! I can't stay up all night for this! Well yeah, I can, ya'll know why none of us should. I hope I catch them hatching out at least so I know who came out of what egg. At least the lone brown egg.

Antiquity, I swear, you are another me all over again!

Day one doesn't start until 24 hours after set is what I was taught-you don't count the day you set; so it'd go:
October 16th 4:00 Eggs set
October 17th 4:00-October 18th 4:00 Day One
18th 19th Day Two
19th 20th Three
20th 21st Four

October 31st November 1st Fifteen
Nov 1st 2nd Sixteen
2nd 3rd Seventeen
3rd 4th Eighteen
4th 5th Nineteen
5th 6th Twenty
6th 4:00pm 7th 4:00PM Twenty one

I count ahead three weeks (7 x 3 = 21). For example I set mine on Oct 24, three Saturdays is Nov 14, then count back three days (11th) for lock down.
I can't get my phone app to let me type at all. The keyboard disappears. I've managed it once so far. I think the app just has some bugs that need worked out still.

Curious if anyone else here will be in the not-started-yet Hatch-a-long for December? I just ordered 2 dozen more eggs and may be getting 2 dozen others. I guess I better get started on finishing the spare room in our house. The garage was converted into a shop and a spare room before we moved in. I started renovating it last month but haven't finished yet. I'm going to need somewhere to put all my birds until spring lol

I"m setting eggs again. I'm figuring around Nov 22nd. Which would make day 21 December 12th. I like to try and set mine on a Friday night.
