November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Blank post, can you tell I haven't done this before? I get so worried about my eggs, I'm constantly in there "helping". It doesn't always pay but so rewarding when you do manage to save one. My last hatch went to day 24 and produced live chicks.

I have heaps on the go, under brooches and 35 in an incubator due 24th. So addicted like the rest of you. I have to stop soon though cause it will be very hot here next month.

I have a video of several of my eggs. Several of them I didn't video because you cannot see anything.

All of the eggs were on their side the same way they were in the bator. My DD was video recording it and that is why it looks like the eggs were all over the place, promise they were not. I use a flashlight app on my cell phone to candle. I have yet to find a "candling" flashlight that works better than my cell phone!

I hate this part because I'm so worried. Four pips last night , some cheese and then nothing. The humidity is still at 64% and never went lower. My biggest worry is that my fan is too strong and they all shrink wrapped! This is driving! me nuts

I'm typing this to keep myself away from the incubator. I know many people have fans in their incubators but, anyone have an idea of how strong they are? If your humidity is on point can the fan be blowing too hard? I used a fan I pulled out of my very old computer, I think it's a 70mm fan but it really has nothing written on it that I can see.(pretty computer illiterate anyway) I think the fact that it sounds so loud to me in the incubator and makes me feel like it could be like standing behind an airplane propeller in there. When I tested it before installing it it just seemed to have a nice flow but not super strong ya know? Ok, someone talk to me please(insert boo boo lip like on Laverne and Shirley).

Checked my broody this morning...no chicks, but I saw movement and heard them chirping away in the eggs! I can't wait!!!

My daughter is going to be so excited when she gets back home on Sunday....hopefully we will have some chicks!

I have computer 12 volt fans in my incubator and research shows them (up to 120MM) at 20 to 40 CFM. I had a 120v one that was a lot stronger. Fans do raise the humidity with movement over the water. My 120v one was blowing straight down on a 10x13 pan of water. I turned it on just to get the humidity up.

When my broody hen had eggs, one pipped on day 19 and then nothing. I thought he'd be the only one and I was sad for him. I left the hen with her eggs and went to bed since I knew better than to mess with her, although I wanted to. In the morning I had 9 chicks! You've just got to let them do their thing. When are your eggs due to hatch? From what I remember yours were due the day after mine (unless it is your quail eggs). Mine are supposed to hatch tomorrow and I don't expect any pips until this evening. My temp was off though so I've been running the incubator a bit on the cool side. It wouldn't surprise me if the eggs take a couple of days longer.

Go start your Christmas shopping or something to take your mind off the eggs. I'll be making tote bags for the cat rescue this weekend to keep my hands busy.
