November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Pics Please! (I need all the help I can get to sit on my hands - Day 20 for me starts in 1 hour...)

I'll try to keep you busy. My second hatch begins today and I've got one pip. Although I may not be able to keep my hand out of the tank myself. Now that I have two, it's just not enough. must. hatch. moar! Gosh, I hope they make it.

Mine too! That's one of the first things I noticed about both when I got their eggs open, pink toes and black legs. I just love chicken legs. I don't know what it is.

Grats on your turkens. I know a lot of people like them. Personally I find them to be a little creepy, and weird, (not to mention ugly

) but hey, to each his or her own. At least they hatched.

I find them ugly too...lol But ugly in a fascinating way and some are the 'so ugly they are cute!' I wanted ONE because they are different. I ended up with 3...oh well, hope one is a hen. I really don't want a roo cause I'm not looking for a flock of turkens...lol But if I get a hen I know if I wanted another I could use her eggs and if I don't then they are breakfast....lol

5 of mine have feathering to some extent on their legs. Two heavily feathered. They are my black skinned fluffballs. Their feet are black black...lol

LOL. I have two with the extra toes, black feet, feathered legs. One of them is my second favorite out of the hatch...lol We ended up with 3 turkens. I only plan to keep the female turkens, so I am hoping at least one of the three are females.

Ok, well... I was very very naughty today.

First I didn't get any pictures of the two little fluffers, but on top of that...

I water candled my remaining eggs.

I was so worried that most of them were dead, but the good news is that all but 1 or 2 wiggled so....

So here I am, late on day 20 with no pips, no known internal pips (although some intrusion into the air cells) but possibly some living eggs, assuming I didn't just kill them by dunking them in a bowl of warmish water.

Don't follow my example. I mess everything up.
I'll do my penance by getting the camera on those chickies.

I'm in the same boat...uggg. I'm hoping as I read maybe you have a pip but as for mine I'm beginning to think I have my first total loss on eggs So depressing. I know my actual hatch day isn't until tomorrow but I havn't heard or seen any signs. I think I'm done with shipped eggs. My local eggs I seem to have almost 100% hatches so I don't think I'm totally screwing things up. Still trying to stay positive and hope someone out of the 4 hatches. Good Luck!

After all, if I can keep a chick alive for 21 days and get it out of the shell with a heartbeat at least every now and then ( which is saying something because apparently I'm really good at just clucking everything up.) then so can you!

But seriously, though, I totally understand. I had a really really bad day when I thought I lost all of my Nov. 7th eggs at lockdown, so I know it's depressing. Just keep your chin up and stay hopeful. After all, it's not over until the fattest hen sings, and there is still plenty of time to see some results. Hang in there!

I was bad and went and looked and peeped to them and looked some more and nothing so I told myself it was ok to candle one and as hard as it is to see in the egg I really think I saw it move but maybe just my eyes! I wet another sponge and put it back. Hoping maybe by tomorrow! I think my problem is all of my other hatches hatched always by day 20 so not having a peep or pip on eggs I really wanted kinda bites...lol Congrats on your pip!!!

I was bad and went and looked and peeped to them and looked some more and nothing so I told myself it was ok to candle one and as hard as it is to see in the egg I really think I saw it move but maybe just my eyes! You know, I get this idea that interference can do more harm than good, but I'm perfectly ok with being a little overly hands on with my eggs. It makes me hecka nervous that I'm going to kill one of them, but checking in every now and then, even when I'm not "supposed to" is good for my own well being. It's not JUST about hatching eggs, it's not ONLY about ending the hatch with healthy chicks, it should also include ending the hatch with a healthy (sane) human caretaker. Sometimes that means the more neurotic and impatient ones among us open the incubator when we shouldn't, and that's ok.

It's not like we're incubating incredibly rare endangered birds and every egg is precious and sacred. They're just chickens.

Sure, we all want the best hatch rate we possibly can, but in my opinion, if you need some reassurance, by golly, go and get it. They're your chickens. You know the risk.

I hope you get some pips soon (but if you're anything like me, they won't be very reassuring either. You'll still be wondering if they're going to make it, lol

) Good luck with your hatch, after all my babbling and pep talk, I hope they make it through for you.

By the way: my live stream is on again. The link is in my profile. It's awful boring and slow going though. Also: I think we should all make a new law. All chickens set to hatch on the same day should begin at a predicable hour and take no more than 12 hours to complete. Now if we could only ENFORCE this new law, I think we'd all survive this hatching business with our sanities intact.

At 4:05 I had my first chick hatch!!! The only brown egg, third to pip and fist to hatch! OMG I didn't totally screw up and I so needed this today! New life when the old passes helps so much. Pictures will follow.

Please if you will, say a goodbye for my dog Tequila. He was 16 and his quality of life was such that we sent him to the rainbow bridge today. He was such a great dog.

Oh RIP Tequila. sorry for the loss. It's so hard to lose a loved pet. Hooray for the little soul who took his place in the form of a chick!
