November Hatch -- Who's going to have late fall babies?

Well, seems making it to hatch day and starting the hatch doesn't necessarily mean You are home free!

In this case the early bird got the warm!

When I went to bed last evening I had one LF chick out and mostly dry and a second egg was zipping. Got up this morning to find the power strip had been turned off

Thdry chick was huddled in a corner and a wet white one lay stretched out and cold in the center looking dead. It was breathing so I popped it into the bator still warm from the bantam/pre-school hatch. It is moving around a little but I don't expect it will make it.

I popped the black one into the brooder with the banties. I restarted the bator but sincerely doubt there will be any more chicks. One other egg has a pip. Guess BIL only gets one LF baby, and ............................

I have NO Idea what this one is. The eggs were from Golden Commets and RIR flock, but the chick looks like an Australorp. He had Australorps with the Comets last spring -- had had for a couple of years. I suppose this chick could be the result of 2 comets, both with an Australorp gene?..Chris sold his Australorp flock in June of this year

Also, can anyone tell me what a Quail d'Uccle chick would look like?

Still have just the one Delaware, who hatched at the end of Day 21. Of the other two, I candled them today, which is technically still in Day 22, but nearing the end of it. One is moving around, but not sure if it's beak is actually in the air cell. The other one is doubtful--doesn't seem to be moving at all and the air cell is huge.

The only reasons I'm still leaving them in the bator are my little one needs at least one pal or I'll have to rehome her. (Overwintering a lone chick in the house isn't my idea of fun.

) The second reason is that these were abandoned by my broody at Day 17 and she was a bit perplexed at the whole thing, often letting one or two of the eggs peek out from underneath her and cool off too much. Could be that the one I know is still alive in there is a day or two behind the others in development. Usually, I'd pull any eggs at the end of Day 22 because they usually aren't strong chicks, but the broody issues change that a bit.

Can ou believe.......my"no way it can survive chick" HAS!! Had to un-stick her wing abd give her a warm water bath but she is alive!! AND another cld egg has pipped!

So, i candled today!! One bator on day 13 (12 eggs) and one on day 7 (16 eggs)
I was not surre what to look for for day 13 bator so i will do it again tonight. What i realized is that their was one egg that was totally dark, and one that was totally clear, so my guess is that i should throw out the clear ones right? oh and these are shipped eggs. So on day 13 should the egg be totally dark and should i not be able to see anything?

And on the day 7 bator i wasnt quiet sure what to look for yet, but i noticed what to look for on the 8th egg. After the 8th egg i realized that the next eight eggs were all developing! They had veins creeping up the sides, and a black spot. (assuming its the yolk). any way very exciting!!!

So far for November I've had 17 seramas hatch (technically those were October 'Halloween' babies, but I think they still count

), one hen hatched 14 chicks but misplaced 2 of them (

), another hen hatched 8 and has managed to lose 3 of them

, and another just today left the nest with her 9 chicks...we'll see how she does keeping track of her kids. I also had 4 silkies, 2 cochins, and 4 EE chicks hatch in the bator. The duck eggs and 1 bantam cochin egg are due to hatch in a few days, there are 18 ducks...here's hoping that not ALL of them hatch, wintering chicks in the house is NOTHING compared to wintering ducklings!

I also set another 9 duck eggs, a d'uccle egg, and a BCM egg in the bator the day I took the other duck eggs out, I just can't let good duck eggs go to waste!

I'd thought about getting some quail eggs from someone, but they stink even worse than the ducks do

Mine are due on the 30th. I have pure RIR and a bunch of mutts in the bator. These are to replace the ones we lost on Tuesday, but I love hatching this time of year because by late spring they are the point of lay. I need more polish eggs.

Well, so far I have a cuckoo chick upstairs in the brooder and a partridge silkie chick drying off in the incubator. I have three other silkie eggs still in the incubator, none of which pipped so far. I know one other was cheeping earlier and the other two silent ones got water tested (bad business, I KNOW), and they are still kicking in there. Technically hatch day started at around 6pm tonight....so I'm trying not to get too stressed out yet, but I'd really like to see the buffs and the other cuckoo chick. My luck at this point says all the hatchers will be roos!!! xD

We had five hatch November 7! Happy healthy family.

This is my first post - hopefully it will appear in the right spot - if not - that's why ;-)

I have a small black hen - I thought she was a Sumatra, but as she's gotten a little older she now has small white spots on her cheeks, so not sure of that.
Anyways - she is a laying-machine. I went out tonight and she had just laid an egg and she was so upset when I took it from her. This is the first time I've had a hen going broody & I'm sort of excited about it. I'm in Michigan - its not cold yet, but it will be very soon. Do I dare let her lay on eggs? I will happily bring her and or babies into the house if needed.
Would this be a huge mistake & should I do the logical thing and just wait until spring...
