Hi there,
I am glad to connect with people who are experienced chicken and duck owners, as well as novices like me. I want to learn.
8 months ago, some people asked me if they could put their chickens and duck in one of my box stalls until they could find a new living situation...I never saw them again. They left me with 5 chickens and one duck. 2 ? Rhode Island reds, and a white rooster. Two bannies...a hen and a rooster. Bannies are in a separate cage as the big chickens and the little chickens fight!
After we figured out that the "owners" weren't coming to get their chickens, my husband purchased 3 other hens.
I have created roosting boxes in the horse stall (which is 10X10 with double dutch doors, so open to sun and air, but predator proof).
After a few weeks, I started free ranging the big chickens and the duck during daylight hours.
I felt sorry for my duck hen (a mallard). A friend had Mallards...hatched 4...all were drakes. So he gave us one. "Mal" and "Drake" bonded immediately!
Although I was getting 2 or so eggs a day during winter, come March, my Bannie hen started laying (for the first time) and my duck started laying!, and all of the hens too.
1 month ago, I lost a red hen (Jackie, a great layer) to sour crop. I tried to doctor her, but she died. I caught it too late as I didn't know what was wrong.
Sadly, 2 weeks ago, my Mallard hen drank motor oil that my husband had left out...(he feels terrible "I had no idea a duck would drink motor oil"...she died a week later. My Drake is mourning her passing. I feel so bad for him. Today, he was on the porch looking at his reflection in the window...his sweet little voice talking. I will find him a new mate...but not sure if he will accept a new hen???
I am a newly (1 yr) retired nurse. I live in the Seligman area on 40 acres. I have 5 horses and 1 mule (we ride all of them...my heart throb is my mule, Ruby), 2 dogs, and 3 cats. My husband and I own Seligman Feed and Supply.
I am home every day, and check on my flock throughout the day. My dogs were pups when we got the chickens...so they respect them. My rooster is kind of mean (he's spurred me a few times) but I feel the flock is safe while free ranging with him around.
My rooster chases my thoroughbred...terrorizes him. All is good

Being mating season, if you find a female that is old enough to mate, your drake will fall in love pretty quickly! The rooster sounds like he has attitude! Chasing down a horse
