novice needing help identifying Rooster

I think that nj2wv has the right idea, but just for a terminology correction, a second generation Red Sex Link is no longer a Red Sex Link as sex links will not breed true. Your rooster is a mixed breed, probably either the result of crossing two Red Sex Links, or perhaps a Red Sex Link with something like a Production Red. Your hen looks like a true (1st generation) Red Sex Link.

You are right. I never thought of them being mixes in the second generation. Thanks for the information. I learned something new today ! They are a good breed. I have a few. My top rooster is a first generation rsl. His name is captain and the name fits. He is a good boy.

Aren't they a mixed breed in the first generation, too? It's that they whole point? You cross two breeds with specific traits to create autosexable chicks?

It's true that they are a mixed breed in the first generation, but a specific mix (red gene roo X silver gene hen) that breeds true to being autosexed by color (whitish males, reddish females) and is a consistently excellent layer. Second generation sex links can no longer be autosexed by color and their lay rate can be quite variable.

Agree they're second generation sex links. I'd say they're last spring's hatch, probably around 8-10 months or so.

Ok thank you. I just know he don't crow yet and barely has spurs starting.
