As I am typing this, another one of my Sebright hens is drawing her last breaths. I don't expect her to make it through the night.
She has been in quarantine since January. At first she started out with a limp. After a week, I noticed it was no ordinary sprain. So, I brought her in hoping she would heal if she was away from the flock and had a chance to regain her strength. As the weeks went on, she was getting progressively worse. What first started out as a limp ended up in her not being able to walk at all. I did what a could with making splints to keep her legs in position but nothing worked. As of this month she started losing a lot of weight. She also developed a crook in her neck that caused her head to twist sideways. Now, as she sits in my lap, the only thing she can do is lie here. I suspect Mareks, moldy food, or some other pathogen was the most likely cause. No other birds showed symptoms of it which I am most thankful for. I tried antibiotics, wormers, and vitamins and none did any good. Here is to one of my favorite birds of the flock. You will be dearly missed and I hope your passing is swift.
