Guns and traps

I love the answers from someone who reads only the first post and does not follow the updates by the OP.

Maybe you can go back and read what advice was given to the OP about trapping.

How about this... I respond in my own fashion, thank you. If it helps, I selected the post I wanted to respond to, based on my criteria, not yours. Simple and easy, eh?

Thank you for your concern and input.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but could you tell me the model number? I looked at Cabela's and wasn't sure which one you were talking about. (hopefully, it's one of the cheaper ones!

). Pistol vs Rifle? I don't know a lot about airguns and what they can and can't do. I only know they are the only gun I can legally fire in the city limits. I'm interested in killing ground squirrels, gophers and if it comes to it, a raccoon in a trap if need be. The quieter the better. Also........I've always wondered, if you shoot an animal in a trap, is it going to ruin your trap?
Thanks!

There is an air gun I would recommend above the .177 Gamos. It is made by Sheridan, called the Silver or Blue Streak. It is .22 caliber and shoots only pellets. They have been made for decades right here in the USA.

The .22 caliber pellet doesn't shoot as far or fast as the 17's, but hits much harder than the .177 pellets and BB's. You can vary the amount of power from full house blaster to mild piddler by the number of times you pump it.

While I don't generally advocate these for predator control, if an airgun is your choice, I would look there.

It's the Hunter Extreme.

Yes, it's pricey, but what cost is too much for protection. The facts are it's very quiet. Cock it once. pinpoint accuracy, and quiet. A fox at 50 yards would'nt stand a chance.
Huge fan of "silent death"

DH and I sat and waited for a while before any foxes showed up. Of course they (2) showed up when I left to pee, figures. They danced around the bait for about 5 min. Car came and they scooted. Waited a little longer. Another fox. This one was shorter but longer than the big light one or the small darker one. Fox #3 went straight for the spot where the dead turkey had been. OOOOH, that one is MINE. That is the little (stealing a term from DD) "butt crunchie" that got Christmas (turkey's name).

The foxes were all very cautious last night. Dancing around the bait. So I left the bait there and went to bed around 2am. Very cranky this morning. Bait was gone. That's right little foxes feel comfortable. Eat what you want, no one will hurt you,..... tonight.

Now the plan is to go to bed early, set the bait when I get up to let Spike out @ 2 as usual. And THEN wait for the buggers to introduce them to my "little friend". As for today it is clean the house and practice on the stuffed animals I find in the attic.

Thanks guys! YIKES........I think that Gamo is a little pricey for my needs! So far, the fox and my birds have coexisted peacefully, so I don't need firepower for them. I mainly want a quiet city limits legal gun to shoot ground squirrels, and maybe a raccoon...and don't forget the gophers! I haven't had a problem with my raccoons yet either, but they are a little craftier and I worry about them.
My biggest fear are the mountain lions, but if I ever see them on my property, I'll bring out the shotgun for them.........I know people have done that in the city limits and it's been fine legal wise, or at least they don't get in trouble. I just don't want to get busted shooting a .22 on stupid ground squirrels by someone passing by and reporting shots. My neighbors could care less what I shoot off.
I have one air gun pistol, but it's a cheap pump thing, that I just use to scare the starlings out of yard once a year. I don't think it would kill a roach tho.

Ok.....a REALLY STUPID question........one of the main reasons I am asking about these, is I really do hate drowning the ground squirrels when I catch them. It does sicken me, but I didn't know what else to do, and I know I could never do that to a raccoon. I thought about shooting them in the trap, but worried I would tear up the trap or the pellet would ricochet........are these problems with an airgun?

hee hee hee we made the mistake of using a 16 gauge shotgun on a coon in a trap one time.... hee hee hee it didnt work out so well. we ended up hillbillying up the demolished hav-a-hart trap and gave it back to my MIL who was all 'you're not going to KILL it are you?" hee hee hee i'm not sure she ever figured out what happened. we just told her that he really put up a fight.
