Now I'm mad

So sorry for everyone's losses. As for myself, my girls will not be allowed to free-range. They have a large comfortable chicken run attached to their coop. To go through the heartbreak of finding one of them dead from a predator attack is not worth my flock being on the loose...no thanks.

I feel your pain.  Last night we lost our first Bantam and she just happened to be my favorite and my daughters chick.  We thinks that it might have been the dog since we have a Rat Terrier that we left home with our Molly girl (chocolate lab).  Very disappointing but I feel that is was my fault that I left feeling comfortable that Murphy would leave the chicks alone.  Now before free ranging I am going to have to make sure the dog is in the house.

Did you notice any blood anywhere?

I'm starting to feel the same way. There is just way too much money and time invested to keep finding them dead. It's even worse when there is no logical explaination for their deaths either.

Blood and guts and to make it worse I caught him in the act again yesterday morning with another Chick in his mouth. This time I was able to stop him before he did to much damage. Looks like now I am going to have to be much more careful about letting them roam. I can't afford emotionally to loose another since these are my girls chicks and they have grow to love them as I have as well.

What kind of coop/run set up do you have? I am a firm believer that chickens and dogs/cats can live on the same property in peace as long as your set up is proper. We have over 30 dogs on our property and it just take communication with my husband about when the dogs will be loose to when I can let my chickens roam. But I've set up a chunnel that I feel better about them having more room to stretch and forage than in a straight run area.

And so I repeat....
