I'm getting into silkies, so far have two buff boys that are Father and Son I got a week ago and a white girl called Snow White that I got on the weekend.
Today I also got a male white boy to pair with Snow White that I had to house separately to her for now.

Yesterday arvo I noticed Snow White came with mites on her skin hiding under the fur. Researched treatments and asked my wife if she could pick up some diatomaceous earth on the way home from work today.

OK, today I put out minced garlic for the 3 silkies for them to eat to do daily for a few days to get the mites off Snow White and the buffs if she spread them to them.
Didn't look like they touched it, so I mixed in some of their food and checked later on and still hadn't touched it.

In between those checks I sprayed inside and outside of their night enclosure, the side of compost bin next to the dust bath and a spot she's been sitting in a bit with suitable insect barrier spray after removing them and the food and water dishes from the night enclosure.

In the arvo after the 2nd check on the garlic after research I added some minced garlic to their water since they didn't eat any.

Then a bit after my wife got home with the diatomaceous earth and Apple cider vinegar, we caught and powdered each of the silkies with the DE and fed some baby liquid vitamin to Snow White to aid in healing up and to perk her up.
Then spread the DE through the night enclosure and the rest of the pen and outside it's sides. We went through the entire 4.5kg bag, should have got the 20kg one that was only $20 more as we need to re-treat it all again in 7 days.

Will see how she is tomorrow and try to feed her some spinach to boost her iron back up and spray her legs with olive oil as it also looks like she came with scale leg mites the poor girl.

I will also add some Apple cider vinegar to their water to boost her electrolytes back up.

The buffs look fine and are a lot more active than her still, backing up that she bought the mites with her as we've never had any issues with them and had housed a flock of young chooks and Match (super mum bantum) in that pen with the buffs before getting Snow White and didn't notice any or sickness symptoms.

Lucky that pen is nowhere near our chook aviary and pen with the main flock and they hadn't free ranged yet this week or was near the quail I moved into a enclosure on the weekend and that I hadn't divided off part of the chook pen for the white silkies yet, will this weekend.

How i hate mites. I think you will find it isn't so much the new chicken but an anual problem you are sure to have if there is any wood about. the diatomaceous earth helps a bit, double sided tape round every roosting pole wil kill them and give you an idea of how many there are but i agree with KikisGirls, you need something stronger. I put a drop of frontline under each wing at night when they are all drowsy. Red mite can get serious very quickly. best wishes.

Thanks, will look into the permethrin stuff, also her mites were creamy not red and not be found with numerous checks after her 1st day of treatment.

She has improved significantly since barrier spraying the coop, DEing them and the inside of the coop and the rest of the pen and outer edging, putting minced garlic in the water one night and then fresh water and adding some apple cider vinegar the following night to restore electrolytes etc and giving her some vitamins those 2 nights in a row and last night sprayed all of their legs and her separated mate to be's legs with olive oil and rubbed it in.
Only hers and the mate to be legs looked like could have scaley mites but did the 2 buffs with her for good measure.

Will try the double sided tape idea in parts of the coop to see how many left but I think I got the ones she came with but will check out the permethrin on Sunday as my wife is working tomorrow.

She was active today and wandering about the several times I checked on her and not preening as much as before I discovered them or dust bathing, though neither have the boys, so I mixed in the DE we'd left sprinkled on top of the dust baths in case it was putting them off.
Definately more energy and fight when I went to catch her yesterday and today and moving around today.

So treatment and restoring her energy levels has gone well so far, will check around for the permethrin on Sunday.
