Now what do I do? Egg thief...

I would totally let my pug Moya out, but she's been driven to insanity by my rooster's crowing, and would herself, be chasing the chickens all day

I am lucky since my beagle does not bother the chickens. You could keep the chickens in the coop/run until they lay then gather the eggs and let them out to free range after that. Since you don't have a squirrel hating dog. If you where closer you could borrow my beagle mix.

Oh Moya is a squirrel hater too. But I think she'd be so distracted by the chickens that it would sneak right by her. As for keeping them in until they all lay, since they're still kind of new to us (I guess this is why) we tend to get straggler eggs as the day goes by. Yesterday's last egg was around 5pm. I really need to have a talk with them about synchronizing early morning laying
