I was outside this morning, building a new Turkey yard...had the 1 yr old Chickens and Roos out there with me....when I saw a little dog come running towards us! It looks like a terrier/weenie dog mix. It has a collar....so I know it belongs to someone. Well....I ran at it with a large stick in my hand...yelling GIT GIT!! It ran for a few feet, then layed down and rolled over....tail between its legs...wagging.

I made several attempts to yell, and just swing the stick AT it...not hitting it...it wont leave. So, I called animal controll.....they said because we live so far out....they will NOT come get it. IF it is hurting my chickens....shoot it! Oh jeesh! I just cant! It is so cute...and sad. I tucked my chickens away safely....Oh boy are they MAD at me! No outside time today. Now what????

I'd tie the dog up and let the chickens out.
Who runs your animal control/local shelter? They had better be an underfunded, overwhelmed, understaffed non-profit if they are giving you lame responses like that.
Doesn't your town elect a dog warden?

I think I would start calling the neighbors if you have any. Then tie the dog up and let the chickens out. The chickens shouldn't suffer because of that little dog.

Otherwise next time you go to town you might have to drop the dog off at animal control yourself.

That pretty much sums it up. We live in a very small farm town. I am afraid if I tie it up, it will want to stay around even longer because of the heat, i would have to offer it water...and something to get it out of the heat, and possible rain coming. Maybe if I call the sheriff...wonder if they could MAKE animal controll come get it? I already have 4 dogs..no more for me! Maybe if I just stay inside a while, it will wander back home. UGH!! Dog owners like this REALLY tick me off!!

Not alot of choice, either you find the owner or the owner finds you. Calling animal control is just a way of you finding the owner with someone else doing the work. If animal control said to shoot it, you can pretty much guess that they aint comming even if you call the sheriff. That pretty much leaves throwing a leash on it in the front yard and hoping the owner sees it and stops or you taking it around looking for the owner.

If it has tags then read the tags. If there are no tags, then deliver it to the animal shelter yourself. I wouldnt let it hang around any longer than it has to. If you make it to comfortable then it will most likely return. Just my opinion.

Most animal control agencies wont help anyone out side of city limits. I know they are a pain that way. You can go door to door asking people if they lost it. Another thought would be to make a bunch of notes and putting them in peoples mails boxes. Where I live everyone who lives about a mile apart still has their mail boxes right next to each other. Either that or you can have someone take the dog in to animal control with a made up story about finding the dog inside city limits. The dog sounds like he would be a cutie, somebody will probably come looking.

The animal control agency in my county has an after hours drop-off. A couple of cages with some straw and a water supply. I dropped a dog off there on a Sunday afternoon once. No paperwork, I could've been from three counties away.

I'd say leash it out front for a day or two and feed and water it, but otherwise ingnore it. And/or try to find the owner door-to-door. If no luck after two days take it to the pound or shelter, or put it down.

My 2 cents-
Slim
