NPIP Certification Friday 11am

My understanding by reading purdue info. NPIP tested facility is on a percentage of the birds. You can have all of them tested. You have to have an individual bird tested to show. For Indiana.

LOL.. it's tomorrow but I'm sure glad your checking up on me.. for a minute I panicked and had to recheck the calendar!!!

I talked to my friend, apparently I'll get a card of some sort to show at the poultry shows and I won't have to have them retested. They test every bird up to 30 I think it was and then only a certain percentage of them after that.. a sample so to speak.

That means everyone will be tested here as total poultry is just under 30 at the moment.

I thought NPIP was more than just checking the birds. Doesn't the surroundings and everything have to be just right? Security etc. I have my chickens tested four times a year here. All have been negative but they did not mention NPIP certification to me. Humm.... I think I will ask in March when they come to test again. I am on a list of Small poultry, Oh what did they call it? Oh sentry flocks. They are trying to gauge when the bird flu might come into the country and they will test my flocks for free except for pyllorum and I have to pay for that test. It also checks for Salmonella and Cocci, also some kinds of other stuff. I am glad to get them checked. Yes I know that if any big problem is found they will destroy the flock. But I would hate to eat or use eggs from a sick flock anyway. It is a safety matter. I feel better knowing. Jean

Tee hee. I wanted soooo badly for it to be Friday already. Sorry I scared you!!

17 Hens and 7 Roosters Tested, all free of Pullorum & Typhoid. I even got a comment about how healthy they all look, how well they clotted and how nice their setups are!

In a few days I'll be listed officially as a NPIP participant breeder/hatchery for the following breeds:

Gold Laced Wyandottes
Silver Laced Wyandottes
Buff, Black & Blue Orpingtons
Black Australorps
and
Jersey Buff Turkeys

Hatchery Capacity : 96

It took about 1.5 hours, I had to catch every bird, which wasn't too hard because I can divide the hen house/aviary, so I herded them all into the hen house and then blocked off the aviary doorway and after testing, just tossed them into the aviary. By the way, if you do this with Roosters in the house, do them first.. they get upset that your chasing their girls!!!

Lotta blood everywhere... on the porch where we tested, all over me (running down my hands).. they bleed for just a minute though and then the down helps to clot the test spot.

For those who don't know, the test involves a large needle prick into the main vein under the wing, kind of like diabetes testing.

It went well.. I'm all registered, have a couple of pamphlets on AI & so forth and I even got a calendar! In a few weeks, I should be an official card carrying member, and for now I have a receipt that is good for 3 months or until I get my card in a month.

It was WELL worth it. I learned a lot from the guy, unfortunately it was raining, but fortunately I have a bunch of room in the hen house so we were able to work in there after we got done with the show birds & free rangers on the porch.

I feel all legitimate now!
