17 Hens and 7 Roosters Tested, all free of Pullorum & Typhoid. I even got a comment about how healthy they all look, how well they clotted and how nice their setups are!
In a few days I'll be listed officially as a NPIP participant breeder/hatchery for the following breeds:
Gold Laced Wyandottes
Silver Laced Wyandottes
Buff, Black & Blue Orpingtons
Black Australorps
and
Jersey Buff Turkeys
Hatchery Capacity : 96
It took about 1.5 hours, I had to catch every bird, which wasn't too hard because I can divide the hen house/aviary, so I herded them all into the hen house and then blocked off the aviary doorway and after testing, just tossed them into the aviary. By the way, if you do this with Roosters in the house, do them first.. they get upset that your chasing their girls!!!
Lotta blood everywhere... on the porch where we tested, all over me (running down my hands).. they bleed for just a minute though and then the down helps to clot the test spot.
For those who don't know, the test involves a large needle prick into the main vein under the wing, kind of like diabetes testing.
It went well.. I'm all registered, have a couple of pamphlets on AI & so forth and I even got a calendar! In a few weeks, I should be an official card carrying member, and for now I have a receipt that is good for 3 months or until I get my card in a month.
It was WELL worth it. I learned a lot from the guy, unfortunately it was raining, but fortunately I have a bunch of room in the hen house so we were able to work in there after we got done with the show birds & free rangers on the porch.
I feel all legitimate now!
