What does it mean to be NPIP certified? How do you become certified? Is there a test?

It's a USDA gov't program to protect the food supply from Pullorum and Typhoid. National Poultry Improvement Plan. You can do it, but it doesn't usually test for any of the common diseases chickens get. I won't be participating. Folks think it means your flock is certified healthy, but it does not. A tester comes out and tests all your birds over 4 months old and certifies you clean of those two diseases and sometimes a couple others for an extra fee, but that depends on your state.

The California Dept of Agriculture should have something on its site about NPIP.

My understanding is that it is required to sale eggs, day olds, or any chickens over the state lines. At least it is in Tennseess. I have my NPIP certificate.
Once you gain NPIP status you can only purchase hatching eggs or birds from other NPIP certified sellers.
