I have just recently been tested and waiting on my NPIP certificate. I have a question concerning added to my flock. I know that the NPIP requires purcahsing from other NPIP certified breeders. How does this apply to the local feeds stores or large breeders like McMurray and others? Does anyone know?

Buying from feed stores is a no-no unless they can give you NPIP papers with them. Most hatcheries, like McMurray are NPIP Certified, and send papers with the chicks (look on the invoice). I just send in the invoice, it has their NPIP # on it. You can't buy from local livestock auctions, they are a hotbed for disease. You can buy from NPIP breeders here, eggbid, ovabid & eBay.

That is what I expected the answer to be. the State of Tennessee Vet's office has little information on the program. No documents instructing me how to handle the paper work. the only thing they told me is that if i sell a bird or eggs out of state i have to send them a two copies of the v-9 form. they are sending me some forms. Where do i find information on what all is required.

Thanks!

i have some Black Copper Maran eggs in the incubator that did come from an NPIP breeder and they supplied the form. I want to have everything in order to be able to sell the fertile eggs.

Just fill out the form each sale completely & accurately (you as the seller, and whoever the buyer is), nothing to sign, but put the date you are selling/shipping the eggs or birds. Then send the top 2 copies with the shipment & keep the bottom 2. You keep the yellow and send the blue copy to your state's Dept. of Ag. The buyer has to send the pink copy to their state's Dept. of Ag. I wait until I have at least 10 forms filled out & send them all in at once. Pretty easy.

Thanks for asking this question... I was wondering myself... and what luck that you are in TN too!!!!

I have been waiting to call and get a appointment because all my birds are chicks. How did your whole visit/test day go in TN? Tennessee is much more laid back about everything compared to other states, so I really would like to know from a Tennesseean. Thanks in advance!

Lol... this is true. Most people from real strict states don't believe how lax it is here. I was just talking about that to one of my NY poultry friends. I don't even have building codes in my county! It helps alot when you are building coops!

I just wonder how old the birds have to be to be tested... like I said, almost 3/4 of mine are still technically chicks.

I'm also very concerned about one rooster I have... he doesn't like to be handled. I'm very nervous about that.

My visit from the AG Tech was seamless. He was very polite and friendly. Two days before the visit I removed the food from the birds. The evening before I gave them food and they were happy to see me. So when they all came in the coop I shut the door. I had arranged to have enough cardboard boxes to catch each bird and place one in each box. I then taped them shut to keep them in. When the tech arrived he showed me how to hold the birds for him. I took one out at a time and he tested them and if clear I put them in the run. All my birds were clear. He tested all 28 of my birds. They will only test birds at least 4 months old.

I would suggest that if you have neighbors close by that you let them know what you are doing. Because the tech sutied up in a white jumpsuit and blue gloves and a mask. Could scare your neighbors

Thanks for the answer on the paper work. How did you find out the information. I have been talking to Tina Rogers by email and she is not giving me a lot of information.

I assume that eggs sold for consumption do not require the form?

Thanks!

What is required if the sale is within Tennessee. The same paper work?

This is what Tina Rogers - State of Tenn Ag dept send me:

"The forms that you are talking about is a VS 9-3 Form that you get from me that must be completed when you are shipping birds (possibly eggs as well) out of state. It is up to the state of destination as to what they require, so you will need to contact the particular state that you are shipping to for further requirements. If it is an in-state transaction, nothing is really needed. "

That doesn't seem right. I would want a form from everyone that I buy from.
