Numbers of hours for artificial light? Just need confirmation!

I'm getting a timer for my coop light. If the sun comes up here around 7 am, and "my girls" mosey on back to the coop to roost at 5 pm, should the timer be set for 2 hours? That way they receive 12 hours of light total? Or should it be on for more hours than that?

I guess I'm asking how many total hours of light the girls should have per day.

You should have a minimum of 14 hours of light.

Mine comes on at 3 am an goes off about 8 am

I turn on my barn lights when I get home at around 5PM and turn them off at 11PM. I use the barn in the evenings so it all works out just fine.
