Sadly, somehow there was a piece of twine in the shipping box with our hatchery chicks, and two of them each got one leg bound up in it. One of the chicks seems to be fully recovered now, and the other one is just OK. She does eat and run around a little, but definitely not as much as the other chicks, and she is growing but is visibly smaller. Anything in particular I should do to try and give her an edge? I am hopeful she's going to make it. I think she's going to lose a few of her claws on that foot as they've turned dark, but hopefully they will grow back :/ her circulation was restricted in that foot during transit from the twine.

Pic for cuteness :) She's the barnevelder in the front teacup

Sorry this happened to your chicks. Maybe feed the affected ones some mashed boiled egg and perhaps electrolyte solution if they are not on it already. If you notice them getting picked on you might want to separate them until they catch up. Good luck.

Thank you! I did have nutri drench on hand, and she's gotten a bit of that each day. I will try the mashed egg too -- she's eating but definitely not as much as the others :/

Your chick is recovering from a serious injury so her body is sending all its energy to healing the foot, and not to growing. You're doing the best thing already by dosing her with Nutri-drench.

When a chicken suffers a severe injury to their talons, their body closes off circulation to those parts to prevent infection from getting to the rest of the body. The process denies the injured parts of oxygen, thus the blackening of the toes. Yes, they will eventually fall off. No, they will not re-grow.

Instead of water give her some Sugar Water and or Buttermilk to drink. Hard boiled egg and OLD FASHION oat meal is good for chicks.

I did alert the hatchery. They seemed concerned... hopefully t won't happen again. She is still hanging in there. Still lower energy and smaller than the others, but I think she is growing. She hasn't lost the talons yet so hopefully she can keep them! You can see them a bit on her right foot here. She is a week old now!

So, little baby girl is still hanging in there at almost 3 weeks old, and she is growing, but growing and feathering much less quickly than all of the other chicks. They are not picking on her at least. I saw today that she finally lost one of her talons on that foot, and I think she seems to be getting weaker in that leg (it seems to give out on her a lot). I'm not sure what else to do other than continue to hope for the best. She had no interest i the scrambled egg I made for her.
