I am teetering on the edge of going diabetic and need to do something about it. I have Crohns as well, so food gets weird in my world sometimes. The crohns also contributes a fairly high level of fatigue. Sigh. I can't really win this game, but feel the need to at least try.

I've been seeing the Nutrisystem plan for diabetics and was wondering if anyone has used it or knew anything about it. Once school starts (I teach), I generally eat a lot of frozen meals. That part wouldn't be that big a shift. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever used Nutrisystem and had good results.

(I've tried Weight Watchers twice. Both times I gained weight and was starving the whole time. The only thing that has ever helped was phentermine, but you can't do that for more than 3 months.)

My doctor is no help. She (a tiny little skinny person) will only say "Eat less, exercise more." Yeah, yeah... I get that. Clearly it isn't that easy or I would be a size 2 about now.

What do we think about Nutrisystem?

I think you have to buy all your food from them, so it can get pricy fast. The other thing is sooner or later you'll have to prepare your own meals.

Have you tried meal tracking to see if there's an issue with intake?

I used http://health.msn.com/dietfitnesswellnesscenter/ to track my meals and workouts last year, lost 47 lbs, but you have to be using it daily, and mindful of the foods you eat.

I tried it once. The food is so nasty! Plus it's all processed and additives galore. Don't do it. It's easy enough to cook up sensible meals with lots of veggies and protein.

I've tried them three or four times. Each time I thought I would stick to it and each time I got tired of the food.

Speaking of the food it's $300+ a month.

You can build a similar plan on your own with all of the low sugar, low fat and low carb food out there now.

I posted a thread a while back asking if anyone knew of a good low glycemic book. I ordered two from Amazon but I'm sending them back. Turns out that just about everything you need to know about a low glycemic diet (like Nutra-system) you can find on the WWW!

Nutrisystem is a rip off. I can't stand the commercials with Jillian Barbery. Her before picture is of her in a freaking maternity dress!!!

Anyway, I was close to 300 lbs, had hypertension and was prediabetic. I lost weight the wrong way for a while and finally got on a low carbohydrate plan. I now weight 207lbs, my hypertension is gone, and I no longer get wild blood sugar swings.

Books I recommend are...
"Natural Health & Weight Loss" by Barry Groves
"Protein Power Life Plan" by Drs Mike & Mary Eades
"Good Calories Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes

DO NOT waste your money on a pre-packaged food plan. They will NOT take care of your underlying metabolic issue.

I don't want to sound like the Queen of Diets, but I've also tried Medifast a couple of times too. One version was 5 shakes a day and nothing else and the other was 4 shakes a day plus one Lean/Green meal.

Price is about the same and you can also do this one using EAS (low carb) protein drinks and one lean protein, low carb meal a day.

The Medifast has less fat I believe, but the EAS are full of supplemental nutrients, plus you eat one meal a day of real food.

....I am diabetic, sux.

I did the nutri sytem thing and did good.. lost over 50 lbs .. then got tired of eating it.. some of it is not so good stuff.. alot of it I liked tho.

I now just changed my habbits of eating .. kept it off also.
its below 300 dollars if you do the automatic send stuff every month. Its not for everyone but for me it was reight cause I didnt have to cook and weigh stuff etc..

But its not for everyone

I have only done the standard Nutrisystem, and found it fairly easy for me compared to other diets. I liked it because it was all there for me, no measuring, etc. I am again needing to lose weight because of substantial physical problems the weight is causing, but the expense of Nutrisystem is out of the question for me at this point.

I am three weeks into the South Beach diet and having wonderful results!
It was created by a cardiologist as a heart-healthy diet and it is great for evening out your blood sugar levels. Also, I have not gone hungry once, which is key for me
