NY chicken lover!!!!

We bought a Weber Grill today - Problem solved with the size of the brooder! I'm using the big box it came in! LOL And it worked out great because when you opened up the box there was extra piece of square cardboard that was the same size as the bottom. So I threw a large black trash bag around that, placed it on the bottom of the box and now cleanup should be a breeze and water spills shouldn't be a problem!

Okay...so I locked miss broodypants in the coop with the eggs. She is in a snit. Did a big broody poop

and then knocked over the food dish. I put her in the nest box 3 times with the eggs she was sitting on and she jumped out. I left. I will check on her again in a while. Hopefully the wench hasnt destroyed her whole house because her sisters and brother live there too!

Lynzi--glad you got your box. Dont forget the prison gate on top or you may have escapes. Mine spend all day plotting on how they are going to bust out. As soon as the gate is move, someone is on top of the box and the others are looking. Kids these days!

No more room in incubators....lots of eggs...have lots of blue laced red Wyandotte & lavendar Orp eggs that need to go somewhere.....

I am determined to out smart these bird brains around here. (yeah, RIGHT!!)

They all try to sit in the same nest box to lay their egg. So Ray built a 3 foot long nest box and we put it where the favorite nest box was. I put some hens in it. They jumped out and tried to get in the nest box with the broody. I put them back in the big box. They jumped out again. So I put the old nest box back inside the new long box and 2 of them tried to get in it together. (THAT wasn't happening, cuz they were both BIG.) So I take the small box out again. They try to jump in with the broody again. Sigh. So I put the small box back inside the big box and they proceed to lay their eggs, one after another.

I am taking the small box out tomorrow and that's that. They'll adjust.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have spent my adult life trying to outsmart my animals. It's sad that I so rarely am able to do so. I know that my IQ is fairly high, so Im just thinking my animals must be WAY up there.

I think they have little else to do but think of ways to outsmart us. We have a lot more going on in our lives than they do.

In theory, I should have at least one chick hatch within the next couple of days, as tomorrow is Day 21 by the calendar, and the Leghorn/Sussex cross has been developing along nicely. I have to build a candling box, as I don't have a strong enough light to candle the darker eggs. My ditzy BO broody was off the nest when I got home, though (she was plopped on a random egg in another box), so the eggs were a bit cool. I put her back in the proper spot, and she settled down to sleep, so we'll see.

My Avatar BLRW is acting broody again as well - she has stolen the Orp's nest more than once, and is insisting on sleeping in a nest box this evening. Goofy thing is out of luck for the moment, though - I want to see how the BO does if she hatches anything and the chick/chicks survive.

I'm also in a rooster downsizing frame of mind again, as spring has made the boys randy, and they're annoying the girls. Chester (the Molester) is the worst offender, as he's (a) clumsy and (b) getting rough. He straightened out his act over the winter and was good to the pullets, but he's backsliding into his sneak-attack mating habits again. He's also starting to challenge Rosco, the chief roo - I saw a minor kerfuffle between them this evening. We've agreed that he looks tasty, and I have Tuesday off, so I may woman up and do him in myself Tuesday morning. I have everything I need - I just need to work up the nerve to do it.

Wow, lots of pages to catch up on.

Was in Albany over the weekend. The capitol is a beautiful city and we really enjoyed it. Also camped near the city in a cabin so we had the best of both worlds. Very tired today.

Girls laid a total of 80 eggs in the last 3 days. Pretty good out of 26 hens.

Four chicks from Menagerie Farm are looking great! May post pics if I can get the camera to take some indoors pics for me that look good.

Welcome to Thassa! I also have an uninsulated coop and in the winter just use deep bedding method. Have to haul out water two or three times per day, but it does save me in electric bills.

Happyhens: Got the wafer type of Mereks vaccine. It did not say anywhere that it needed to be on liquid nitrogen, so I guess I will know about how well it works in 4 - 6 months. It needs to be used within an hour of mixing. Such a waste of 996 doses. Oh well. Costs less than raising 4 birds just to have them drop dead at point of lay.

Cass: Hope things are continuing to be better and you have better chick days.

Rancher: Great to hear from you! :)
