NY chicken lover!!!!

Going to Arnold's to buy feed. Yes, it is about a 30 min. drive each way BUT a 50lb bag of layer is only $10.50 and I usually buy 8 bags plus some cracked corn ($9 / 50?) and goat feed too. Locally grown and milled and they are wonderful people. I went there once and my truck wouldn't start. They jumped it for me and I was ok till I got home.

Still have some birds for sale.

2 day old Red Golden Pheasants
2 week old Red Golden Pheasants
couple Australorp Roos (free!)
a Turken chick & 2 Australorp chicks

Make an offer!

Chick number three has hatched (Dominique cross by the look of it, with a perfect white spot on its head), so my BLRW has done well. I've moved her into a broody pen so she can hang with the kids for a couple of days and get used to them. Go, chickies, go!

I am going to process some quail today. I hope to do 9 today and I have quite a few in the freezer already

This is the recipe I plan to try

...except with a few more quail, as there are 6 of us. Also, I don't use salt, I will use herbs from the garden.

.

Did you leave the skin on or off? My husband is going to process ours, so if you have any tips (or how the heck we're supposed to do it, lol)

Dang coons tripped the trap again last night, looks like they ran one of the yard bunnies into the road too. :( How do I keep them from setting off the trap and stealing the bait??? Stupid Coons...

my guess is a fox is tripping it. A fox will reach in and grab the food. But the trap only closes on it's back allowing it to get out. I had that happen last night.

Hmmm, that may explain the bunnies in the road, they never go in the road. One of the loose feral does actually had her litter in the middle of the yard instead of the back coop, I figured something must have been trying to eat her? I had a bunch of escapees before I had the baby that I could not catch.

So how does one catch a fox? Is my box trap too small? One of the hunting guys suggested burying the bait and putting the trap over it? I have a leg trap that I would need to unrust, but it makes me anxious to use it, I may just order one of the "safe" leg traps instead, I'd hate to catch my own dog or one of the ducks.

you need a larger box trap. I won't use a leg trap for the same reasons. I don't want to catch my cat or a chicken.

I wonder if that is my issue with trying to catch the coons too? I'm using the larger of the two box traps that TS sells, I think they also sell a slightly larger single trap and then the big coyote trap with the bait box... Is the coyote trap too big for coons and foxes? The plus to that one would be I could use live bait, which they really seem to prefer...

I haven't purchased the coyote trap. Too large wouldn't be the problem. The only issue I could possibly see is if the trip lever takes too much for a coon to trip it.

Quote: I skin quail rather than try to pluck. I snip off the wing tips, too. Other than that, it is basically like processing chickens, except in miniature. Using a finger or two to remove the "innards". If the rib bones break near the backbone, they are really sharp, so be careful when scraping out the lungs. I heard some people use sharp kitchen shears and cut off the backbone and remove the ribs, then stuff them to keep their shape.

Hi there! New to the site. I'm located in between Ulster and Sullivan counties near Ellenville. Hoping to find someone to swap with! I've got a handful of red Orpington roosters that I'd love to trade for some egg-laying hens. If anyone's interested or even just around, let me know! Thanks! :)
