I just know how FREEZING I am, and I am not old either. lol If I wrap the coop and the run in greenhouse plastic they should be good and still be able to get outside. I might not make it outside though.....

Be carefull that you do not make the set up too airtight. Plastic can cause condensation to form and that is worse than the cold.........

I know others have wrapped in plastic. IF you are going to it had better be REALLY well ventilated. Otherwise your chickens will get a respiratory disease and die. Youneed to ask yourself this. How did chickens survive for 10,000 years WITHOUT human help? Trust me, they know how to be chickens and will be fine. All we do by coddling them is make them weaker

X 10000. I've seen folks that stacked up hay bales to prevent drafts. In a few months, the thread from the alaska peeps will start getting lively again - if they don't need heat lamps in Alaska, we don't either. Granted, I assume if you live in alaska you have cold hardy chickens, but if my little bantams and leghorns can stand double digit negatives in an uninsulated coop, most other chickens can as well. I really did worry when it hit -26F out here thinking I'd find chicksickles but they were just scruffling around, wanting out, just like nothing was wrong.

Did get a bit of frostbite that year on the leghorns, but it healed up without any intervention. My rooster lost a few comb points.

Well, here's today's fun and joy. One of my JG's chicks is hopping around on one foot this morning, and keeping its other foot raised off the ground. It doesn't seem to be in pain, is eating and drinking, and can actually outrun (outhop) me. It's also being defended by both its mother and the roo - they don't even want me touching it, let alone the other chickens.

I did get a good enough look to determine that there is no blood and no external injury evident, and the leg is only drawn up and not hanging away from the body at some horrible angle as though it's broken, so I'm taking the non-interventionist route for now and letting it stay with its mom. All I could really do would be isolate it in a brooder anyway, which would bring its own set of issues. If it worsens or if the broody abandons it, I'll pull it out and deal with it, but for now leaving it with her and seeing how things go appears to be the best option.

I agree. Mama and papa are protecting it....no blood and separating certainly comes with it own set of issues. Good luck..

Just had a job interview - if I get it, I'd be back to full time (yuk) but I'd only be about 10 minutes from home instead of having to drive to albany! (YAY). Takes a few months for the background check, tho, so I won't know anything for sure until then. =(

Hey everyone I'm still alive.


Updates.

Sold the SFH's. Had to chose between them and the Birchen Marans. Which by the way are not up to par with Green Fires. None of the hens has silver on the hackles like they should. It will be a cold day before I order chicks from a so called breeder. So far only Kathinmo's BR's have lived up to the hype. They are very nice but they are all trying to go broody.

The other day there were three hens in the corner all trying to sit on one egg! I've plans to make a broody set up but Lord I'm tired and want to get thing done and settled. I plan to cordon off part of the hoop so they can't be accessed by laying hens. That has been a problem. Hens adding to the lot of the broody. What a night mare I had. Tossing eggs not fertile and dead chicks. Ugh! You would think I'd know better by now.

Stony - the ALBC newsletter had some interesting things to say about ducks. For me specifically that they can lay as many eggs per annum as chickens. What interests me is they don't crow. I' ve 7 roosters here.

Nearly finished with a new half hoop coop. Pics added.


To many broody hens and they are driving me nuts. I've plans to go away and don't want to leave DW to deal with chicks. I've got one hen with two now. Those will be given away soon I expect.

Garden is nearly in though not completely fenced in and the chickens are driving me crazy. The BR's are loose in the back yard and getting into trouble wandering around. Today they went down along the fence into the neighbors yard. They also wander into the woods. They're not easy to see since the weeds are so high.

Broodies that you DO NOT want to be broody - We have been putting them in a WIRE dog kennel (wire on the bottom as well) for 3-4 days feed and water as normal. I put the kennel in the run-very secure and under a roof. No more broody.

Nope, I happen to have a couple black Australorp Roos and a NN Roo chick available too.
