NY chicken lover!!!!

To rancher- Usually the county or state have nurseries. Every spring (usually April to May) you can put in your order for a bunch of seedlings or 1 -2 year old evergreens. We did that some time ago. Unfortunately after a few years, I asked my next door neighbor farmer if he would clear the back field but stay away from the small evergreens planted in the back. You guessed it. He mowed them all down and only left some wild cedar firs. Well I did at least get the field cleared. Now 20 years later, you would not know there was ever a field there. The wilds take over quickly!

We have the MOST, Museum of Science and Technology here in Syracuse. Plus the Zoo.

GS is here from TX and we've tickets for a train ride. Should be good for us all though I've never been.

Good morning everyone, I have a couple of questions and I'm hoping you can help me out.... The little monsters are locked up in a run all day and then around 6 or so I like to let them out so they can free range a bit and just have somewhere new and exciting to explore. My worry is how far will they wander off? I always sit outside with them and keep an eye on them but I worry about them wandering into the woods or a little too far away.

So my questions really are will they actually be able to find the coop again? For the past few nights I essentially round them up and herd them back inside the run before their normal bedtime. They go inside on their own at about 8, so they know where ‘home’ is.

They are almost 4 months old.

Also is anyone going to the sale at the Schaghticoke fairgrounds this weekend?
Mine are beginning to wander further and further when I let them out. I have gotten to where I actually keep my silkies in the pen and give them some treats while my EE's and RIR free range. Instead of staying by the house and garden, they are going out into the field and closer to the woods. My daughter and I end up going to round them up and bring them back towards the house, we don't want any accidents.

I found a home for my 2 EE hens and my RIR hen! Yay! My mother in law decided she wanted them for egg laying, I agreed as long as they didn't end up dinner. She agreed. She can't take my roo though, town ordinance. Does anyone need a EE roo? He's a good boy and watches over his hens, very sweet? I just don't know what I am going to do with him, I don't want him to end up on a dinner plate.

So pharmchick has RIR terrorists, I think I have EE rapists. Mahogany, the crooked toe EE roo, tried to jump Luna the big blue orp pullet when I let them out this morning. As she ran out past me, I grabbed him and laid him on his back for awhile, enough to stop the train of thought running through his little male bird brain. Seen Harry the fuzz face EE roo do a run/jump attack to one of the other small pullets earlier this week. The third EE roo, Fezz, tired once when the sickly GLW was alive, but has backed down in status since the big kids moved in. Ugh! Boys! Hopefully one of the boys learns to court the ladies nicely and look out for them. So far they are all like a bunch of teenage boys, the EE have sex on their minds, the Orp and GLW roos are all about the food. Good thing the girls look out for themselves.
And Mahogany is a talker. The crowing starts incessantly at 4-4:30am. I don't need to get out of bed until 6. None of the other roos crow nearly as much (and definitly not as early!) This sleep deprivation may lead to mumbling about a beak and duct tape...

Today's "Will They Eat It?" challenge featured some excess brood comb Alan had to cut out of the hives. It had eggs, larvae, pollen, and a little bit of honey in it. He threw it in to the ravening horde this morning, figuring that they'd like the larvae. It turns out that they liked all of it. They demolished it within minutes, running screaming with pieces and scarfing it down wax and all.

I actually thought about going there!! How is the zoo? I'm a bit of a zoo snob - I had season passes to the bronx zoo for a few years and pretty much lived there.

I have a bit of a cold (got it from stupid WORK grr) so I THINK we are going to do a lake george boat ride, then home for pizza, ice cream and cake (anyone who knows me knows I'm a granola head so that's very unusual for me hahaha) then I am still thinking of something to do in the evening. Would love to do a movie, but nothing much out I like enough to pay for it.. Hmm..

But yes, science museums and zoos would be my thing. I asked coworkers last year and they were telling me things like wine tastings and fancy restaurants. I'm a pizza and ice cream and zoo kinda gal. :p Oh, and hikes in caves and chasms. :p I'd do the caves, but the lantern tour is only on saturdays and I'd like to do that one I think.

Good for you! I can't take any roos - I have Rooster musical chairs going on myself. Hope to take the losers to the schuylerville auction next week unless someone wants them, but I can't figure out yet who to keep. Have four roos in my main coop (30-something hens so not ridiculous - and the roos are all very young). Would prefer to keep just two, so I have my main EE roo, then two NN roos (one black and my little barred guy) and one Chantecler roo that looks like he will be pretty! Then my white americauna roo (Q-tip) in the other pen that needs to start doing his rooster duties one of these days or he's going away too LOL).

We went to the Zoo a couple weeks ago. It is nice, but likely wouldn't compare to Bronx. They had Jersey Giants in the farm animal section, think that was the most exciting part for me!

Went to Howe's Caverns a few years ago, really cool. There is also the baseball stuff down the road in Cooperstown if you go to Howe's Caverns.

Might be a long trip, but Corning Museum of Glass was really neat. And Watkins Glen is just to the north, hiking and waterfalls in the state park. If you make a weekend of it, go Saturday morning to The Windmill, I think it is in Dundee. It is a similar to a flea market, but with much nicer stuff. Lots of crafts, Amish baked goods, fruit and veggies. It is only open Saturday morning because it is Amish-owned. If you just want some outdoorsy stuff, Ithaca has Buttermilk Falls State Park (complete with swimming hole and diving off the cliff), Taughannock State Park (falls, hiking) and lots of Gorges to explore. And if you plan it right, Hangar Theater has several plays throughout the summer. Each summer on our way home from Empire Farm Days in Seneca Falls, we stop at Cayuga Lake Creameries, near the Tompkins/Seneca county line. They have the best home made ice cream. And Ithaca if full of the 'granola' type people.

Morning all!

Laperian--I have 7 rir boys in with 19 pullets and yes, a couple of them are rapists as well. The girls are having none of it and scream loudly and manage to get away before anything actually happens. So far those two roos are the top contenders for freezer camp. The Survivor-chicken style game is due to end at the end of august or early september and I keep reminding the boys there can be only one. Okay, maybe two. So far I am lucky in that nobody kazoos (crows) until 5 or 5:30 and its only for a short time. I am so hoping it stays that way. My silkie roo doesnt crow till 630 and he only does it for 5 minutes. My terrorsts spend their days plotting ways of escaping their run and when a few are let out to freerange, they are into everything. My big girls (aka 2 yr old layers) usually show up to let the terrorists know who owns the joint and to put the beat down on the boys. Tbe terrorists are learning quick to avoid them.

Hen--I can actually picture that! I introduced the terrorists to grapes the other day. Threw one in the run and it was better than world cup soccer! One grabbed the grape and ran and everyone else chased. The grape dropped and someone else grabbed it and so on and so forth. It was hilarious. I finally gave in and threw in a couple of handfuls so everyone could enjoy some. Who needs tv??? This was much better reality tv!!!

I had to chase Trouble all over the yard yesterday to discipline her for going after my silkie roo again. She is just being mean to him. I see jail time in her future if she does this again. She wont like being the only one locked up while her sister freerange. He tries to defend himself but she is so much larger that he has no chance. Poor little guy. She deliberately stalked and attacked him. None of the other hens bother with the silkies. He is a good boy who is good to his hens and easily handled with a great personality so I am not about to let anything happen to a good breeder. The worst part about discipling Trouble is that the chasing part for me was that the running was aggravating my already defunct gallbladder and the pain was just making me madder. Cant wait till its gone.

Going to be hot as haddes today so I hope everyone and their cheeps keep cool. I have already filled dishes with cool water and have apples in the fridge and some tote tops ready for wading pools for all the cheeps. Off to work first though.

Have a great day.
