NY chicken lover!!!!

I just want to say I would take 70* days over this 90* stuff any day.

Well today was the first day of official daycare for my girls. I've been scrambling for a sitter recently because 2 of my family members have had circumstances change so they couldn't watch them anymore. It went well, they wanted to stay and play not come home. It's part time the rest of the summer, but in the fall it will be everyday. That means I'll be paying out a full weeks worth of pay each month. I've never had to pay for day care so this is going to be quite a change. I'm praying for my youngest to potty train then I can send her to pre-k which is cheaper then day care.

I've had broodies all summer so far. And evertime I turn around there is another one doing it. Jeez girls this is not the cool thing to do so quit the madness!

I had to put my daughter into daycare when she ws 3. It was harder on me than her.. She is 26 now and getting married the week after the get together! I did pay alot for day care though!!

Hi Angie and welcome! What kinds of chickens do you have and how many?

Okay...so I look outside this morning before I leave and what do I see? 8 escapees. Really??? So I go stomping outside and chase them around the run/coop, trying to catch them and find out where they got out. Turns out they escaped throught the little space that dh left himself to get into and out of the run. The netting had gotten moved along with the boards. So I fix it all up (sweating bullets by now and I have to go get pre-op tests done) and then manage to grab 6 and shove them back into the run, squawking their heads off. I couldnt catch the roo or the pullet that was left so I said the heck with it. If you arent eaten by the time I get back, I guess its all good. Well, I got back and they were still here. I let out the laying hens cause they are good girls and can take care of themselves. The two terrorists are not thrilled that they are out and the first thing the girls did was go over and make sure those two knew what the deal was. Its hotter than hades outside. My silkies are confined as the heat is bad for them and they are in shade. At least there is a breeze blowing.

I hope everyones cheeps are making out alright in this weather. I will say the terrorists (aka rir;s) certainly are taking it all in stride. Doesnt seem to be bothering them at all.

Yes, but Amy, the real question is...were you in your PJ's and muck boots?

PS, hope everything is aok with you tests.....

Featherz--you arent the only bad chicken momma. I did not let the silkies out because I cant sit out in this heat either. I let the big girls out as they are good at sticking around and staying safe. I would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to my silkies. I am hiding inside my house as when I go out, I feel like I am entering a clothes dryer that is on.

Dh found some steak in the fridge and I thought he was cutting it up for himself for dinner. Nope. The terrorists and the hens. I dared him to actually stand inside the terrorist run and handfeed them a piece at a time. He just looked at me and went out the door with a big plate full of tiny pieces. He came back in less than 2 minutes with an empty plate and all digits. Wow. If he doesnt return some day I will know what happened. Just sayin...

Haha Ginny! No, this time I was dressed kinda nice as I had to get all my preop stuff done for my surgery on thursday. I WAS all nice and clean and cool until I had to chase 8 delinquent terrorists around and around the coop. I forgot that the game cam is out there too so there are probably a million pics of me running past it chasing them. I was sweating like a pig after 10 minutes. I am sure all the nurses and techs appreciated that as well!

Mornings are best for nightgowns and rubber boots. Thats when I scare the hell out of anyone driving by at 6 am looking at my yard!

Here is the escape artist. I have 6 more just like him. Rir rooster, almost 15 weeks old. Thinks he's mr cool but has learned NOT to mess with my hens, especially Trouble.

Everyone keeps talking about this heat, I guess I have enough shade in my yard that the chickens are doing alright. they go into the woods along the yard and hide out in there and under the bushes where the dirt/ground are cool. I can take the heat, its this wind! Anyone else getting it?!? It's like a dry hurricane out there!

Night number two with the bricks and new locks last night - again, just a small hole on the side of the brick. this raccoon is definitely giving up. (For now) No more scratches on the coop either. My husband made a good point the other night. We didn't have any raccoon problems until I started making him turn off the side porch lights at night. I never understood why he left them on all night. It's not like he was coming home late, or we were expecting anyone late at night, so I figured it's 10pm, we're going to bed, turn off the lights! Well thats when our trash would get knocked over, I'd wake up to garbage all over the porch and in my lawn, and then the digging around the coop. We've gone back to leaving the porch light on at night - I'm not saying it's working or not working, just want to give my husband the benefit of the doubt. We'll see what happens.
Tons of wind here...up on the mountain. It feels like someone has the heater on FULL BLAST...it windy hot air is just too much. My chickens seem to be doing well, gave them some cool watermelon and some overly ripe peaches...they were happy.

My EE roo went to a good home over the weekend, the hens seem to be a little lost without him. My dopey silkie hen seem to miss him the most, so my little silkie roo is trying to buddy up to her. She's treating the silkie roo like a little punk. He is singing to her and everything...she is having none of it. I love the drama.

It's like Chicken Days of Our Lives.

Angie, welcome to byc.

Stoney your are lucky to have easy shavings.

Henni - I've got broodies comming out my ears. I tossed the RIR hen off the nest again and I found a Lav orp in there today. It got so hot in the hoop coop over 100 today I wonder if any of her eggs will hatch. I've tossed all but six. I have another BM on six eggs. The others didn't make good mothers but may have done better if they had a separate place to raise chicks.

Sorry Tab - but I hate snow and will take 90's any day of the year. With food prices they way they are I need my garden more than ever. Though the chickens don't like the heat.

Grey now that you mention it I do have to remember to go this next time. I have some Del roos from Paul Harter to take and perhaps some pullets too. My EE's are laying well considering they are going on four. I wish they all laid as well and I hope the new girls lay as well. I've never been but need to make the drive. If your there look for the CNY Blooms hat.

Lynzii - the BR's go into the woods and it makes me a nervous wreck. I know it's dry in some parts of my yard but where they are it's green and I need to mow it, so I know there's water under there somewhere.

Feathers - sorry about the eggs and wish I could help. I have one hen that lays a white egg but it must be an EE and I'm not sure which one it is. All my birds were brown layers but somehow being that the originals were hatchery I ended up with a white layer.

Cass - hope all goes well with your broody.

Tab - I don't envy you. I was slated to watch my DD baby when they thought they'd be moving here but now they're in TX and I am sad but Lord have mercy they just left after two weeks and he was into everything. I would not have been able to have kept up with him. The only time he sat still was when he was in the stroller and we were going for a walk.

Vmdan... - Enjoy the wedding.

Pharm - are you feeding your chickens steak? I go out in boots and pjs' all the time. I don't care if the neighbors see me as long as they aren't taking pictures. I would not turn my back on that rooster. He looks like trouble for sure.
