Is there anyone on this thread that is not too far from the Syracuse area any may have some older silkies for sale? I'm looking for at least one other hen and maybe a roo as well. I've learned recently that it may be best to seperate my "lone Silkie" from my orpingtons seeing as how I have a roo and he could do some damage if he tries to mate with her. However I do not want to seperate her from her flock and keep her by herself. I cannot rehome her because she is my 3 yr old DD's hen and she would be devastated! She has a such a great bond with this hen that she is the only one that can actually "catch" her and hold her. She doesn't run from my daughter in other words, she runs from all of us, making it hard for us to ever get our hands on her if need be. So I'd like to hold onto her and keep her seperate from the other larger breeds. This of course would also mean having to get another coop which I'm thinking of trying to build one myself.
So if anyone has one or two silkies that are her age and would be ready to be kept outdoors or can give me any info I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!
Very true, I just let my 2 Buff Orp pullets go to a new home because they were getting very large and I had VERY nice silkie chicks and I was worried about possible head injuries. Silkies are notorious for suffering head injuries, especially with larger birds. My orps were gentle girls, but I didn't want to take that chance with the little ones, especially since I am striving for Show Quality birds.I just fear that if he tries to mount her, he could end up injuring her. Right now he hasn't tried to mate with any of the three hens, but I fgured if I could prevent it from happening then maybe I should? He's just so big compared to her.
Why do you have to separate her? Is your roo trying to mount her? If he is leaving her alone, let her stay with the flock. Actually, My LF Roos try to mate with my D'uccles (Smaller than a silkie) and can't do it, so they just stopped trying.
I just came back from the fair, starting tomorrow, its just Bantams, the large fowl were in the 1st half of the fair.Has anyone been to the NY State Fair yet? I think we're going this Friday during the day. Can you actually buy chickens from people there or do you just basically grab their info because the ones they've brought are for show only? I've never been to this fair.

Kinda hoping that they go on and forget it but its not...otherwise Id seriously think about it
You be the guinea pig...good luck i hope they look beautiful!!I saw a pic of the frizzled polish on the BYC homepage and fell in love, can't find one though. Maybe next year I'll find ONE. Just one hen would do fine and add a little CHA CHA to the yard. I am currently focusing on breeding some nice BBS chicks for my stock next year. The hens are FINALLY laying.Silkies and Frizzles and Polish and Frizzles make great crosses IMO. Silkies and Naked Necks make good crosses too.
I'm going for the frizzle and Naked Neck cross. DH says it will be one freaky chicken!Silkies and Frizzles and Polish and Frizzles make great crosses IMO. Silkies and Naked Necks make good crosses too.
