I can't explain how I feel, but this is an outlet for me. Thanks for being here you guys!

Tab, you don't have to explain how you feel. Cancer has touched so many. I am so sorry that it has spread.

Mine have never laid. I have 17 potential layers (more coming of age soon) and the MOST I have ever gotten all summer is 6 eggs. That's less than 50% and just not acceptable with the cost of feed going up and up and up. (And it was only for one week that I got that many each day....now I get 3, maybe 5 eggs a day....never more than 5)

I really fed up with them all. Remember I just started this about 16 months ago, so NONE of these birds are beyond laying age. Heck, some of them are only 9 months old and still no eggs. Sure they laid their first egg, but then NOTHING, notta.

Cass, I had a similar problem with 2 hens, though they did exhibit some illness for a short time.....stayed by themselves, weren't interested in eating, etc. This was in march. These birds stopped laying, and never laid again until I culled them in December. One hen came back into lay, but we can always tell her egg because it looks weird. I contacted a vet at Cornell and she said w/o an exam or necropsy she could not say for sure, but suggested they had a rhino type illness that can ruin the oviducts to such an extent that they can no longer lay eggs. (i may have gotten parts of this wrong, but this is the gist of it) So, should you cull, I would strongly encourage you to have a necropsy done of a bird. I wish I had. Whatever my birds had came from the wild bird population. Anyway, just a thought. Good luck.

Tab--so sorry to hear about the cancer. I will send good thoughts and prayers your way.

Framac--I allow them to freerange every day and give them all the scraps from my kitchen. I have 21 in the big coop (the terrorists aka rir), 8 in the smaller coop and 4 in each silkie coop.

Adorava--I hope you find them soon.

What a day at work! Craziness! It was nice to come home to the cheeps. Best therapy ever. Off to an early start tomorrow.

So sorry Tab, hugs to you. Stay positive, there is always hope. He is young enough to fight. Matt and I have lost 4 of our grandparents to various forms of cancer. I understand the feeling, it is a hopeless lost feeling. It is so hard to watch, but keeping a positive outlook, even if you have to fake it, was sometimes the only thing to do. Cherish the time you do have and don't give up.

I reached 7 1/2 dozen eggs in my fridge, was running out of room for anything else. Gave 3 doz to a couple of the Amish guys working on our roof and a 18 pack to neighbor Amish man when I went to talk to him about the mini stud horse getting in our pasture this morning. Luckily the Arab mare stayed far away as the young pinto horse of ours played wild stallion. Cant decide if he is herd protector or village idiot. As the roof is getting replaced, I'm rummaging through the scraps to find any bits that may be useful to future chicken projects. Found a piece of dripedge that is the right length for the nest boxes. Even hubby I'd getting into it - think we can salvage some of the old chimney blocks to use to block up a chicken coop.

Tab I wish you strength and will send prayers your brother's way. I don't know you and your family, but cancer has touched my life like many others and I wish you and your family the best.

Cass it could be over crowding in your run. I don't know how big your run is, but one of the many problems with a small run for a lot of birds is low egg count. FYI my newbies this year are slow starters. They will pick up.

Cass- our layers which hatched in April are eating up a storm... but not of them all are laying yet. We have 10 ladies and get anywhere from no eggs to 3 eggs per day. We do have one unknown hen laying double yolk eggs...these are fun to find!
