Freezer camp keeps the roos real quiet.

Had store bought chicken last night. It was mushey and fatty! I want more roosters next year!!(TO EAT!!!)
I have yet to eat a 'real' chicken, store bought only in this house. Is there any difference in preparation? Now beef in this house, we only eat the 'real' stuff. Store bought is so greasy. Seeing the really cheap broiler or rock cross chicks from Meyer makes it very tempting to give it a try.
I just do a slow roast. Many people put them in a slow cooker. I have them processed, then freeze them right away. I slacken them during the defrost, which means they spend several days defrosting in the fridge.
that would be irritating .Has it been windy ? Is there something waking them up with a noise ? besides light ..
ChickPrincess... could it be possible that a predator is making it's presence known in the night? everything that eats meat likes chicken... most of them roam the night looking for a meal...
I keep my chickens next to the house for winter, but thankfully my bedroom is on the complete opposite side of the house from the birds. I have 3 cockerels and they start crowing at 3:30 am now instead of 4:30 with the end of daylight savings. I hear nothing until I'm up and in the kitchen making coffee. my neighbor can hear them tho'... but, she's already up by 4:00, so who knows if she would hear them if she was still in bed. Ear plugs are cheap and cheerful. I'd get some right away without delay ~ unless you can move your chickens to a more remote, yet easily-accessible-winter location.

Talked to DD today seems the rooster I have with the disjointed leg needed to be put down. I think the cold weather did him in. (I'm in AL you remember). He's a CR from GA. I have another, but was hanging on to them both since I only have six birds. Two rooster and four hens. I haven't heard if the hens are laying yet. Probably not even though they are old enough. I don't heat nor put lights in the coop.

Morning all. Balmy 32 this morning and so I moved a little faster in my nightgown, winter jacket and rubber boots this morning! Got home from work yesterday and finished getting the plastic on the silkie coop. Of course now its supposed to warm up. Freshened up all the coops with more pine shavings and did the nest boxes as well. Almost froze doing all this as the wind was quite cold and blustery but at least its done,
Lap--I wont buy chicken from the store any more unless I have to. Once you taste homegrown, everything else is bleh. A nice slow roast or crockpot and they come out tender and juicy. We just skinned ours out as we were only doing 2 at a time. Makes it easier for processing.
Rancher--caught up and will continue with prayers. The Lord never gives you more than you can handle and I know from recent experience that sometimes its an awful lot. Sorry to hear about your roo.
Chick and Cheeka--I must have gotten real lucky cause my roos never start until 530 or 6 am and then they only crow for 20 minutes or so. I have 8 so I consider myself lucky that they are mostly quiet, even during the day.
Another long day at work. People are getting crazier. I just smile and tell them to have a nice day.
