( Although I never thought I'd have chickens !! ). Maybe I could buy some. What is kefir ?

Thanks Ginny

kefir is a cultured milk. It is said to contain more varieties of probiotics than yogurt. Being made from milk it is high in protein. I never thought I would have a meal worm farm in my bathroom!! You can purchase meal worms from a pet store!!

crazy4 chicks- I give them extra BOSS. During the molt they need more protein to grow back their feathers. I also give them a little vitamins in the water.

Stony - I noticed the wooden eggs are missing out of the nest boxes in one coop and the EE's are up on the roost more than usual. The BM hens have moved to laying in the BR coop. The chicks in the hoop coop don't hang out near the coop either. The squirrel I caught was in a trap just outside the coop.

Agway has a 21% protein Egg Producer pellet. I've read that Heritage breeds need more protein than Hybrids.

Marq - you may be right and I'll be setting more traps and a rat trap too. Might a well and it can't hurt.

vmdaniel - Have you got a pic of your meal worm set up? That sound interesting.

it was so warm today, but very overcast. don't trust the fox not to be lurking with the cloud cover, so the gang got about 90 minutes of tightly supervised range time this afternoon. I got the last of the necessary outdoor work done before it gets cold again, it's pretty muddy in the yard, but the coops and run are nice and dry. I have another big load of leaves to bring in tomorrow morning before heading out to work. it'll give them something to do for a little while anyway... spread it out and kick it around...
I also started my first batch of FF, it'll be "ready" tomorrow afternoon, hopefully they won't snub it. I've also got a smaller bucket setup for the chick crumbles, but I'll start that in the morning. the chicks are due to arrive Tuesday morning, thought it would be smart to just start them with FF from day 1.

Please let us know when they come ..& show us pictures ..Too bad you couldnt deliver them to yourself ? Do you have to pick them up at the post office ?

Gramma--Im not into pokemon but I do like your chicken ones.

cracrz--asking questions is a good thing. You will get the hang of all these terms as time goes on.

So I looked up the fermented food thing. It looks interesting but I am wondering if it would be too fattening for laying hens. Its used to put meat on meat chickens but to do so on layers would be detrimental I would think. Anyone want to weigh in on the subject? I might be willing to try it if it doesnt make my hens fat and increases their egg production again. I have been supplementing with fruits and veges and protein from unwanted leftovers. Boss is really expensive down here now but I may have to bite the bullet and get some anyways.

Finally starting to feel human again so I am off to get my snow tires on then coming home to let my silkies out for a while while I do some cleaning of their coops. If I have time I will spruce up the terrorists coop as well. Those boys have been real respectful ever since I netted them and pinned them down. I still watch them like a hawk though. Speaking of hawks, I havent seen or heard them for some time. Perhaps they have finally moved on. Still not taking any chances though.

I still think you have something else going on here. Tree rats are a nuisance at best. As I said earlier in the thread I have killed more than 2 dozen predators this year so far.16 coons, 3 possum, 3 weasels, 2 foxes, and a bobcat. So squirrels.....
