Thanks- I wish I could take credit for them. But next spring I will have chicks I can take credit for!!!!!!!!! I only spent $600+ on my Cochin flock this year but IN MY OPINION it was WELL WORTH IT!!! I only now can look forward to hatchin season!!!
Beautiful birds!!
Raising mealworms is VERY easy. They practically raise themselves. I can answer questions if anyone needs it. I've raised thousands for my old leopard geckos.
I never thought I could do it either, but once you get over the initial "bug" thing, it's no big deal. But even after all those mealies, I still couldn't handle the beetles without latex gloves on!

That is funny! Most people (family and friends) look at the larva and squirm!! But the adult stage doesn't seem to bother them!!!

Cheeka,

What breeds did you get? Very Cute.

I just placed my order for a dozen Red Dorkings, and and working on some wheaten Marans for Spring.

I am also planning on hatching. I am so lucky that my wife tolerates my obsession.

Do you get a lot. Is this something where I'd have so many my chickens couldn't eat them all and I'd I have to freeze them?

I used to not like crows just because they were loud and obnoxious. But an enemy of my enemy is a friend of mine. The crows and my chicks now have a working relationship. When I hear the crows squawking loudly altogether I know they are fighting with a hawk. So they've become my early warning system. Today 4 crows were ganging up on one hawk and chased him away long before my chicks ever saw what was going on. Thank you crows. I take back everything I said about you.

My chickens say that they can never have too many meal worms. I feed the adults(darkling beetles) to the chickens too! When I go into their pasture( the chickens, i don't have a pasture full of meal worms!!), I get mugged!!! I can hardly walk, they get in my way and trip me up!! They LOVE meal worms!! If you get too many, just let the chickens have them!!!

I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but if I drop a flock block in the chickens seem to get back to egg production a lot quicker. I was getting 3-5 eggs a day, and with in a week of dropping a flock block in, they were in the 8-10 range.(15 total chickens most at 16 months +)

I took your advice & bought the girls a flock block today. Hopefully this will help, if not I'm sure the girls will enjoy it anyway. It made my whole van smell lusious today

You can easily get thousands if you choose to, but your flock will eat them faster than that! Trust me, you would never have too many. Even if you did, roll them in some peanut butter or some lard and the wild birds would love you forever! (Bluebirds supposedly go bonkers over them). It takes several months to establish a colony, but then it's pretty much self-sustaining. I'm mooching some worms off a friend and re-starting a colony again.

Okay, what is a flock block made from??? Never seen it.

Evening all. Had a productive day yesterday. Cleaned out both silkie coops completely and refreshed them. Found out I had an issue with the waterer in one of them and fixed that. Moved a few things around in the boys coop. All waterers got a thorough scrubbing, inside and outside ones. Freshened up the other two coops. I let the silkes out to freerange while I was cleaning the coops. The young guys decided to take a run at Little Man, my older silkie roo. He put them all in their place and made sure they understood their place on that side of the yard! Boys came running back to chicken momma for protection! I told them that I had warned them not to mess with him and that they got what they deserved. They hung out by me for the rest of the day while Little Man followed his women around the rest of the yard. I did have an escapee from the terrorist coop who also followed me around all afternoon. She went in to the boys run and little Legolas quickly ran her off even though she was twice his size and double his weight! He may be little, but he is mighty!

Dh stopped at agway and ordered the egg layer feed to try on the cheeps. Hoping that maybe it helps with the egglaying. Trying to boost their protein intake.

Countyboy--gorgeous lads and lassies you have there. Money, time and energy well spent.

All those baby pics make me want to hatch!!! Soon enough I guess. Have a good evening everyone.
