I just got an email frm Hinkjc and the Lavandar Orpintong chicks are $20 each. I will rethink how many I want.

For day old chicks? Hmmm. I thought I saw on their website they were $12. I suppose that would change. I can't justify more than $12 for chicks. For the lav orp eggs they are $120...I'm pretty sure that included shipping.

those prices for eggs are very high. They do have beautiful birds, but yikes....and I thought Marans eggs were up there...not!

I'd be tempted to go for the eggs instead. Especially if they won't be shipped.
Guess I'll have to think about it..

I couldn't find anywhere on the website what the prices are.

What you must understand is that she has been working on these for a long time to develop them as close to SOP as she can and that take time and money. What you are paying for is not just the chicks but all her hard work. Once you buy the chicks you can hatch as many as you like and sell them to other for less than she is now and that will cut into her sales. Kinda like a patent. She needs to recoup all the money and tiime she spent breeding and culling and all that stuff.
My hatchery buffs are yuk compared to these and they are decent layers. Not all pure breeds are.
These are all the things we breeders of dual purpose birds work for. To have a good layer that has some meat on it's bones when it's done. That all roosters are nice and meaty and not throw aways.

What you get with hatchery birds are "terminal" birds. The roos are no good for meat and the hens are no good once she stops laying.

There is no question Jody's birds are awesome! I just can't justify spending more than $12 for each chick....right now. I have a White Orp breeding pair from Hinkjc and they are gorgeous. The hen is a laying machine! Plus I have some of their lavender orp eggs coming this week. Along with BBS Orps and Lavs Orps from another breeder.

If this hatch goes poorly, I'll look into getting a few chicks from Jody.

Currently I have chicks posted to CL. These are $3 for EE/Del crosses that I expect to lay an olive color egg. Unfortunately there are those who want me to do all the work and then "give" chicks away. What's more they think, or MO is that they think chickens just grow with out eating. I can not afford to raise chicks for 6-7 wks and then sell them for $3. 6-7 weeks is when I can tell the sex of Delawares. Or worse raise them to the POL and then sell them for $5. Even if they were mutts it would still be the same amount of work. I would sooner chop their heads off than give them away.

I have to feed and water them every day and that isn't free, not to mention the feeders and other supplies. This will be my last hatch for a while.

Sorry I'm just ticked off, cheap people.

Believe me....I feel your pain. I have hatched for folks for 3 years now and had to lay down the law early on. Pick up 1st week and they are $3 unsexed. After that the price goes up because of the costs & work involved. I won't even place them on CL. Most of the questions I get from there want them for free or garuntees of no roos.

I hear ya..
try buying a straight run and having to give those roos away...that was painful, but I would have had dead birds if I kept all those roos. Had them on CL for 2 months with no luck and of course, no auctions in sight at that time.

Living downstate here I can't have any roos.:<( Unlimited hens so that's a good thing.
But I do have a guy who will take my roos quick and pay me a few $$ for them as well. I know most of them hit the soup pot eventually, but he keeps the nice big ones if they behave themselves.
Poor roos..........such is their life.

If you live within driving distance of West Winfield, NY,,, Kings Auction holds small animal auctions every 2nd & 4th sunday mornings each month all year long. Auctions start at 11:30aM.

iF you want to sell, its best to bring your b irds before 9am, so they won't be the last ones to be sold. The earlier you get them there, the better price they sell for.

The Bridgeport auctions start up in March, I think, not sure.

I also learned of an auction in Bath. Every May and October, I think.
