NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey Y'all.
Broody question....how do I know if my Broody I serious about sitting?? Since I've moved her to her own confined area of the Shack, she only gets off the nest to eat/drink and less often beg for treats if the other girls are offered them.... Is she serious enuff to put fertile eggs beneath her, it's been a Lil over a week or should I wait?? Her belly is nekked, incase that's a factor. Thanks For Any and All Pointers( first time broody coach) Haa~
she sounds serious

So I was informed last night of the reasoning behind why I couldn't get my chicks shipped from CT. There WAS a miscommunication on their end. I was told that "Chicks must be shipped within 24 hours of hatching as they only have 3 days worth of nutrients in their system. After that they need to wait till they are mostly grown where they can handle a couple days in transit with no food and water. I physically could ship the chicks but it violates USPS rules and the risk of them arriving in very poor condition is very high."

But now this makes me curious, does this vary by state? Because I have been in contact with someone who has 4wk olds that is willing to ship to me, so what is going to be done as far as food and water goes for these chicks? I do believe if I decide to purchase they mentioned they will be shipped Next Day which is probably the difference. I guess everyone is different in the way they handle the shipping of the chickens.
their statement on shipping newborn chicks is 100% correct. Chicks live off of absorbed egg for 3 days then NEED to eat.

PersonallyI think shipping any live critter through the mail is wrong on SO many levels. I have never and never plan on ordering chicks through the mail. I have been asked dozens of times if I would ship newborn Sumatra chicks and I refuse to. But that is probably just me. I think it is cruel .

As for the laws, I don't know

Trust me, if I could find someone close by who has the colors I want I would much rather drive up to an hour or two to get them. :-(

Hi everyone, hope we all get the nice weather they predict!

It was sunny but cool here yesterday, but I did take my 4-5 week pullets out. In the nice bright sun, I notice that I have two possible Roos! One came out of the red sex-link pullets tank (TSC), and the other from the Light & Buff Brahma pullet tank! Combs are pinkish already, and the red has more white feathers than red, and I think I see hackle but I'm not sure...argh!
... I hope just early bloomers, one is my son's. we already have two BCM cockerels, so someone would have to go... Plus, I just got the 6 banty's which are straight run so likely roos in that bunch too.

10:30 this morning this little jerk was chicken hunting. Right between the eyes.

2 years ago I lost a coop full of 9 Sumatra's to one. So far in the last year my cat has killed 3 and I have shot 3. I have broody's on eggs. He had to go

he is trap bait tonight
What exactly is it sorry don't know many small rodent type animals.
weasel. An evil killing machine. Or was

People often wonder why I have so many coops. One of these weasels gets in a coop of 40 birds it will kill every last one in one night. The saying "don't put all of your eggs in one basket" applies here
