NY chicken lover!!!!

Thank you, that was interesting. Its hard to believe people raise them. The coop has been empty for a year, I'm not sure if that matters. We will definitely be wearing gloves and masks while cleaning it. We plan on pressure washing the inside, I'll probably use a couple gallons of bleach now that I read that! LOL.

Be careful! Bleach can mix with something in the urea and the fumes can kill. I grew up in NYC and pidgon poop removal is serious business for good reason. Who knew I was riding my daily commutes with walking poison poopers?!

x2 Urea reconstituted with water from the pressure washer will make ammonia. Ammonia and Bleach make a toxic/deadly gas. Of course you will be outdoors while doing this, but anything less than a gas mask and you will run the risk of lung damage. So wash with plain water first. Scrape and wash again with water. THEN bleach the heck out of it. Gloves and mask. And try not to let the neighbors see you, cuz they will start to talk. LOL

Couldn't sleep, so I moved the EE's (and aparently I only have 3 barred rocks, thought I had 5 but two have turned out to be black EEs!) One of what I thought was an EE is golden toned with no cheek patches. I will get photos tomorrow. I also added anther dowel to the older chicks crate and they're in heaven! I made this one higher so they can start establishing sleeping orders. My smallest RSL jumped up there first!

So I now have (3 week olds) 1 silkie, 1 cochin, 2 RSL and 2 White Leghorns and the (1 week olds) 1 mystery chick, 3 barred rocks and 7 EEs.

Nyquil is kicking in, back to sleep for me.

Thank you everyone. I just did some research and made my chick a boot. She looks silly but I think she is pleased with herself as she's been running around in the brooder! LOL. She is also a lot quieter!
Rancher~whats the youngest you have? I called Tsc. In Fulton and they have Dark Brahmas that just came in today. They are just a few days old and I already have light and buff brahmas so why not get dark too?! Someone may be coming to look at my horse tomorrow, I'm not sure what time so I may not be able to go anywhere

On a good note I finally got to see the pigeon coop that was given to us today. We are trying to figure out how we're gonna get it home. It is bigger than my husband guessed, 6x12! It must have held a lot of pigeons! It hasn't been cleaned in quite some time so Its pretty gross. I can't wait to get it home and start working on it! Also my current coop is getting a metal roof on it this weekend since the roof is leaky right now. My chickens are so spoiled! Haha.

they are just a few days old. certainly young enough to be put in with your chick.
These would be two marans.

Ok, where to start? Got a couple pay checks from the new job. Am going to TSC tomorrow to get 6 Golden Comets that are marked down. Am working on getting the brooder box set up tonight.

Just to catch up. I am from the northern fingerlakes, joined to reasurch raising chicks for eggs, lost both my jobs in a week, was bumed I wouldn't afford my chickens this year, and everyone was very supportave of me and I got many wishes for luck.

I Remember YOU ..Congrats On the new job & may you have many Chicks !

Cass, I am doing just that. Using a tote to start with pine chips, and feeder/waterer and light. I am getting 6 pulletts as I donLt want any roos. Someone told me to turn the light off at night and cover the brooder to keep it warm, not sure I like that idea.

Rancher, I am taking it slow to learn all I can while enjoying my chicks. I realy apreciate the advice I have received on this site.
Think of it this way it is safer .Than having the light on all night ..& they will be fine.. they will cuddle together . Heat will stay in with it covered .
You will see.. the chicks will stay away from the heat sourse if they are too hot ..you cant monitor them at night when you are asleep .
