NY chicken lover!!!!

Another crazy day, but so far all is well with the new girls. It has been one week today that I got 4 pullets from Rancher. Thursday will be one week I got Marq's birds. I still have the younger pullets separated from the much larger ones. I brought the young ones in last night & tonight in their cage to our unheated walk-out basement. Just figured it was way too cold too fast to leave them outside in the coop. Anyway, I'll sleep better knowing they are inside. Big girls will be all right, I'm sure.

The bigger gals taught themselves the literal ins and outs of the coop and pen after only being shown the door once. They are so cute, you can almost see them thinking. It's amazing how they have a set routine already and come inside on their own around 7:15 each night.

The Marans head is still the ring leader, which I assumed would be the case. She used the roosting poles immediately, while the Del and 2 Columbian Rocks slept on the floor together for several nights. Last night they all joined "Helen" up on the highest roosting pole. There was obvious excitement among them as if they couldn't believe they'd done it!

The younger pullets are incredibly lovable, but boy can they eat!

Featherz: I'm really sorry about your pullet.

Where are those Pictures of the new babies ?

It sounds Fun ! BUT you are 4 1/2 hours from me ; (

I would like some.. as they sound beautiful ..I have no way to hatch them though...
Someone said you cant refrigerate them it kills them ..so how do you keep them ?
IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT HATCHING A FEW, I WILL NOT ONLY PROVIDE THE EGGS, BUT I THINK I CAN DIG ONE OF MY STYRO BATORS OUT OF STORAGE AND I WOULD LOAN IT TO YOU. if interested, let me know with enough advance notice so i can find the bator as well as save some eggs up for you. I am sending a PM to you about this.

You worked with plastics so know that they are deadly... do you have any concerns about it being "TOO" open during the winter? The front is shown, the back has windows that are the same.
I see it being brittle in the winter. Ever bumped into anything plastic when it is zero ?usually breaks. I really can't tell from that pic about the openness

looking at the big picture. How will you repair it if something breaks. Say a door hinge? How will you latch the door and how will you repair it when it breaks. The safety of it concerns me.

That is a lil' tykes product. I have dealt with those for years. They last for years and do no seem to be affected by the cold we have in NY. I have had children slide down Lil' Tykes slides in the dead of winter with no problems. As far as repairing a hinge breaking (and THAT has happened due to rough children) you get a piece of dowel ( 1 inch, I think), Cut a hole in the top of the broken hinge part and insert the dowel. Test fit it, then secure dowel at right length with a small metal screw on the front where it won't affect the swinging of the hinge. Put the door/shutter back in place (using brut force, cuz that's how you assemble those things) and it is repaired. Actually it's better than new, cuz that dowel is not going to give way any time soon.

My concern is the chickens pushing the shutters open. Did you way you were going to secure wire of some kind over the windows? That would keep the chickens from pushing them open when they are acting up. I would use hardware cloth so raccoons can't reach in and grab one by the neck. I would also cover the front at night with a tarp or something to keep the wind out while they are trying to sleep.

like I said it is probably just me but I would not trust that to keep my critters safe. I can see a hungry bear , large bobcat ( I killed a 40 lb one last fall and a friend killed a 38 lb one same month) or coyotes getting that open or breaking something in the middle of the night way too easily. Personally I would not trust it. Just my .0005 in this economy

I agree, but then I keep all my coops behind electric poultry net.

Anyone need any Juvie English Orp Roosters? Black or Blue LF...

I'm ordering from Berrytangle Farm on Mon and there is room in my box if you'd like to add some and chip in for shipping...

She also has a Black Bantam Orp Roo that is split for chocolate available, but its got leakage...

Shoot me a PM if you're interested, BYC is being all funky for me and not updating posts for some reason...
