NY chicken lover!!!!

We've come across a large variety of bugs since moving here but I've never seen those. Then again, the trees they are attracted to are not in my backyard, as far as I know anyway. There are couple hanging across the street from us (down a side road) and some along this state route we live on. I'll have to tell my son to keep an eye out for them. He loves looking for cool looking bugs.

Do any of you have these hanging up in your neck of the woods? I just noticed them this morning when I was bringing my son to school.

We have had these for 2 years now in our area. These bugs are wiping out massive amounts of trees and they are trying to figure out how to stop them.
That's also the reasoning behind not being able to transport firewood more than (I think) 50 miles. The emerald ash borer can hitch rides.

Something salty.......
ended up noodles, butter (with a little salt) and broccoli . Good stuff.

experimented. Cooked the lil rooster in the crock with a pint of homemade wild grape jelly and water.

good stuff

what rooster would challenge a fox? One with a death wish. He did his job, got the hens out of there.

Best way to deal. .22 rifle. In the chest is easiest. Foxes inbox traps are best caught with live bait in the little cage in a fox trap. I wouldn't ever put a chicken through that.
Use a leg trap and yu will have a one legged chicken. BUT THAT will catch the fox quicker than a box trap ever will.

A friend of mine catches an average of 13 foxes a year with leg traps. He rarely loses a chicken now. Myself, I shoot them.

I guess I assumed he would fight it to protect his girls.
We might have to go with the leg traps, but I still think it's inhumane. I'd rather do snares and have the fox die quickly.
I wish I had the time. I'd sit all day with a .22 and wait for it. I've never hunted, but I think I could shoot a chicken threat. lol

I wasn't able to catch my fox(es) last year. And I'm not capable of shooting them. So I gave in and bought a $$$ load of electric netting and fenced in the entire back cleared field with 15,000 volts. No more fox. Also ran wires around the coop and run.

oh, and I don't expect my roos to take down a fox. They need to run the girls to safety but that's about it.

I'd like to look into the netting. What did it cost you? What do you need besides the box and the netting? I have a box picked out already. Where did you buy the netting?

just have to weigh out the options. Dead chickens, $$$ in electric netting or a leg traps.

When I hear the chicken alarm like you heard is when I grab the gun. Stays near me while I work.

Evening all. What a day at work. It turned out to be just me all day due to my supervisor having a death in his family. I cant really say where I was working (not the pharm, thats tomorrow) but the logo is a siren. Anyways, just me, on a friday, on a holiday weekend. To say that I was busy is an understatement. All I can say is idiots.

I guess its time to take down the puppy pen and let the little red hooligans hang out with the divas. Dh came in from locking up the cheeps to tell me that 2 of them were roosting on the top of the pen wire and one had flown out of the pen and was hangning out with the ladies. If there is no blood or bodies tomorrow then the pen goes and dh will have to go out in the rain and fix any possible escape spots the little devils may find. Actually Im kinda glad they are out because it means less work for me. Im quite sure the ladies will put them in their place. There are benefits of having new roomies, like getting chicken mommy to give them some of their food!

My silkie is getting better and was fooling around in the brooder. Time to move them on to a new home. Then I can have my basement back. Unless Rancher would like a dozen of those cute fuzzy adorable creatures!

Going to be cold tonight but thats okay. My internal thermostat will be happy. I wont need the fan tonight.

Lynzi---you still have bugs at your house??? My chickens ate everything. If I see a bug, it must have just arrived because this acre has been stripmined by my 41 chickens. If it moves, it gets eaten. My biggest fear is falling asleep in my lawnchair because I wouldnt put it past them to eat me!

Have a good night all. Pharm tomorrow and hopefully the freaks will be elsewhere terrorizing people other than me.
