NY chicken lover!!!!

Will try that with a white candle like I said it seems to be progressing so I figured I would leave it
Can you just throw dried grass clippings in the run or do you have to chop them up into small pieces first? I thought I saw somewhere that you can get crop problems if you don't chop up grass clippings into small pieces I would love to throw some grass clipping in the future but not if I have to throw them in the food processor first.

I like to toss some granite grit on to whatever stuff like that I'm spreading. Grass clippings , lettuce or other veggie matter. I figure they gotta grab a stone or two while eating. Grit is too cheap to risk a crop problem so I spread it liberally.

Good luck with your broodys lol

So at 5:30am this morning as I leaving the house to walk the dogs I here my silkie hen sounding her I need attention alarm so I every single neighbor can hear me till you get here. So I tie the dogs up and run down and I swear she looked at me and said "hey" lol

It's not the broodys. It's the blasted chicks. Right now no one is getting eggs. No new broodys!

I've learned a new term from PP mag, though I'm not sure what it means. "Incubator Creep". It's in regards to hatching. I think it means the "creeping up" in the number of chickens you have. As if things around here weren't creepy enough.

Yea, thats how my first two silkies were I got from a local woman. Her adults were the same way, so I'm thinking her stock was hatchery.

I'm thinking that if I go to AL again I might bring some eggs back. The security in Birmingham was very nice the last time in dealing with the eggs I brought back. The friend I got them from is big in show circles down there. We shall see.

Hi , Did you get the egg cartons today ?
**** If any one is interested 20 large egg cartons shipped for 6.60 ***** Priority shipping ****

This How I do it when the grass dries ( if it ever stops raining ..( it is raining again now at 3:34 am ...UGH )
we mow the lawn ...after the grass has dried a few days ..(.if there are clumps- break it up more - or the grass is still green it needs to dry more & be broken up more
I just rake it & put it in my lawn cart & put it in the coop or the run or a garbage bag . If you have a lawn sweeper this is easier as it collects it all

As it is no longer green they dont eat it ...just walk on it ...LOL it is approx 1 inch long ?

I did this last year ...bagged it & stored it  in a dry place ..I also stored dry leaves in garbage bags .
I am still using last years grass & leaves that I gathered inside the coop & run . We did add some straw to the run also

Not that I know of didn't check mail yesterday knew their wasn't anything live there so figured might as well just wait until today when I have to go to drs. Will have to look at clipping more closely I swear mine are longer than an inch more like 3 or more.

I would not process grass clippings or other foods(to much work for me!!).  If your chickens do not have access to small stones, by free ranging, I would feed them grit.  Grit can be purchased at many chicken feed stores.

I am sure they get small stones outside but I mix grit in their food anyways as I do give them occasional treats of fruit or veggies

Ha, my TSC Silkie has 5 toes on one foot and 4.5 toes on the other. One is growing out of the other thumb toe, and it's tiny. It also has semi-regular feathers on the wings, but every thing else is Silkie. Has more of a mohawk than a poof too and at just 11 weeks is much bigger than the pure breed Silkie I got from Lynzi.

Awwww! I want silkies!!

I just throw the clippings in as is. All my hens in the hoop coop are over a year old.  I will tear up fresh kale & turnip greens for the tots since the youngest is 5 weeks. But Stella tries to break those pieces up smaller before she eats them. They also have grit available to help them.

Will have to just start giving them the clippings the hens get rocks outside and grit is mixed in with food along with calcium and black oil sunflower seeds and tots I do have small grit for them too so I could occasionally give it to them.

Day 19 for the bator eggs and nothing yet, so I'm not sure if they'll be early birds or not. I cannot believe it is raining AGAIN! I'm tempted to let the silkies out in it so they can get a "shower" last time I did that with Duncan and Pearl they looked beautiful the next day. LOL The chicks are pretty dirty so they could use a bath. This aughtta be interesting. I'll be sure to have my phone ready to take pictures.

We're you up checking on them most of the night. Good luck hoping you start seeing some action soon!

No, no, not me. LOL I actually got good sleep last night without my daughter coming into bed at 3am and kicking me the rest of the night.

So I just took a look at the calender to see when these eggs would hatch if I placed them under my broody silkie because I wanted to make sure nothing interfered with my vacation at the end of the month and it looks like they'll hatch on or after my son's birthday (7/4). So we could end up with another holiday hatch. Hmmmm decisions decisions.

clearly that bird is giving me the evil eye.

that's why I didn't want silkies or birds with feathered feet. It's just too muddy here. Lord have mercy with all this rain it's like something out of a horror movie. Dark and cloudy. My arthritis is killing me.
I agree this rain is a horror am so sick of it.

That is what I figure grit is cheap it can't hurt so I mix it in with their feed .i put the feed in metal garbage cans dump in some grit, black oil sunflower seeds, oyster shell calcium and mix it all up then before I feed them I mix it up each time to try to avoid it all settling on the bottom.

Now rancher those wouldn't be silkie eggs would they?

Oh go for it what's a few more chicks if they are silkies you can always hatch a few for me lol! Ok am off to the doctor got to get the stitches out then to PT to see how much therapy this new shiny shoulder is going to need to be back to working like new . Hopefully not much figure can't be doing too bad it's only been 8 days since total shoulder replacement and I am out of sling and can even use That arm to feed myself and I even put up my own hair today.

Now I know some folks might think I'm a miserable old coot, but you are my friends. She has the nicest Silkies and RIR's and orps too. She shows her silkies.

Last time I traded some Del eggs for hers and three turned out to be silkies. Of course I let the live, but I did eventually sell them.

Hey, if anyone is interested in any of these chicks they will be available!

Th

From what I've gathered from everyone else, insulating a coop is not always a good idea. Chickens produce a lot of heat so insulation in the summer can be very harmful and insulation in the winter can lead to frost bite if there isn't enough ventilation.

Preening is what a chicken does to clean it's feathers. Takes its beak and kinda runs it thru a feather to the edge. If that makes sense.
