NY chicken lover!!!!

OMG I cant believe it got Mama. So sorry to hear that :(

thanks. Mama lived a good long happy life. She was 6, raised 4 broods a year for the last 5 years. She never was fenced ever. She was only held once, the day I brought her home. She died quick without making a sound while raising lil ones. She lived a good long happy life. And most of all she was allowed to be a chicken. She lived outdoors in a tree when she wan't raising lil ones. And was SIX! Still laid 5 eggs a week when not broody.
One of her offspring just hatched 14 of 16 eggs a week ago. She brought good genes to my flock

She had chicks when she was killed? did the fox get them also?

And I agree she was a happy chicken

yes she did and no it didn't. They were about 5 weeks old and she was in the part of her ritual to let them go. She would raise her young in a coop and teach them to roost in the coop. When that happened she would start to distance herself during the day from them. They went in the coop that night and have been fine ever since. Free ranging little fools by day, and in a coop at night. Just like all of her offspring.
It was 8am and I heard chickens and ducks give the predator alarm near the duck pen. I ran outside and Mama's 4 lil ones were roosting on the duck fence and there was a pile of feathers where I last saw Mama. 20 feet from my back door. I saw the fox a few times since but today finally got him.

Here are the two EE that hatched. The 3 eggs next to them have yet to pip. Found the maran pullet egg off to the side, cold. Hoping to get another 1 or 2 out of this hatch. The other egg was partially hatched then crushed, beautiful speckled egg. Chick was black with yellow flecks, although still wet. That was the one found cold last weekend too. Hoping to get something more! Although Luna is a dedicated broody and good mom, she is a klutz with the eggs obviously. Maybe next time we let her set a couple weeks then find day-old chicks to stick under her. Her hatch rate is terrible!
