And scientifically it's a valid point, the bacteria that we have cultured by fermenting will not survive outside the bucket for long periods of time, different weather conditions. I would think it would actually go rancid like yoghurt if left out too long.

I used to feed it twice a day ..but since all 4 roosters are still with us & in the same coop / run . I put the food in there all at once ...so all 16 have enough .
Normally it is gone by 12 -24 hrs ...It either dries out some & becomes regular food or it is gone

Heres a quote from her Article:
" I don’t give fermented feed to my chickens every day. This is mostly because I’m not always home, and lack the time and resources to bring them fresh feed every day. But I also believe in balance when it comes to food; while I’ve yet to come across any reports of someone getting sick from consuming too many probiotics, I feel moderation is best. Most of us don’t eat fermented foods as our main course every day, and our chickens probably shouldn’t either.
I still provide fresh greens and dried mealworms (along with grit and oyster shells) when I give my chickens fermented feed. I still provide their regular dry feed a few days a week, especially when I go out of town. I’d say that right now, they average half a week with fermented feed and the other half with dry feed. Either way, they are as happy and healthy as can be! "

I'm struggling a bit with the FF and feeding it once/twice a day because I have 38 hens to feed and it's tough to make sure everyone gets some. I've been putting it out in the he morning spread across a couple of trays but I also leave their dry food out as an option just in case. I'm hoping they don't end up getting over fed...trial and error I suppose.

There is just so much information on it out there that it's hard to pick through.

I have to bring this up only because it was topic we all discussed a few weeks back - regarding the ads on the side of this forum?? Well I had been shopping for a nice pair of winter boots for weeks. So of course after just a few days of visiting a certain website for these boots that caught my eye, I started seeing them advertised on the side of this website. Well this last Monday I finally decided to ordered them. They were pricey but I finally said who cares, I need them, I need something that is going to last me, that is waterproof, etc. They came yesterday, I love them. This morning, I came on here to post about my lost hen and I noticed the same ad I had been seeing for the boots I ordered this week. Only today they were marked 25% off! I clicked on it to bring me to the site and they were $38 cheaper than the price I JUST paid! So I called the store and they credited me the difference! Moral to the story, regardless of how annoying those ads may seem to some, today they saved me $38.99!!! LOL

Oooo where are they from? I can always use new good outdoor winter waterproof boots ;)

Naturally, chickens would be out eating whole seeds if they were able to free range, plus bugs, some plants. I like to ferment whole grains because its better for the chickens to eat them, than say mash or pellets. I do feed mash because its just not practical for me to feed all whole grains and a lot of work. So I compromise and feed them the mash with the fermented grains & with the liquid mixed in, so I feel they are getting some whole grains at least. I am now just mixing the mash with the fermented grains 3 times a week. Its too cold in the barn for it to ferment, so this way, I can keep one bucket going in my house & carry it out on the days I feed it.

I've also gotten into fermenting for myself, Kefir, pickles, cabbage/saurkraut, adn I see the benefits already. I saw the FF benefits inn the chickens by the huge firm poop that is coming out of them, instead of the watery brown yuck that they were eliminating.

Don't fret over what you are doing, you will eventually find your way of doing things. I think sometimes we "overrthink" things.

Watching the chickens realize it's cold, try to get back in the coop only to be pushed aside for someone who hasn't realized what snow really is yet is hysterical. Duane finally bowled over about 5 of the girls to come see what all their squawking was about, got four feet out the door and ran back inside running over the same 5 girls again.

Good morning snow here there was snow in the run omg I think most will stay in the coop. I put fresh water near the coop. Three full size birds crammed themselves in the silkie nestbox. Not sure what that was about but i had to goto work so i didnt care lol.

Well the sick silkie passed away last night. But the other silkie is well.

The eggs are looking good its day 11 if i had a better light source than what is on my phone i would send pics n vids but my phone is the strongest light i have to candle.

Back to work enjoy your day

My Sebastapol geese are resting in Buffalo, thanks to my friend Karen Lohr & her sister Barb....after a long drive from Ohio.

They will come here on Thanksgiving day...I can hardly wait...

Now, I have to cram into my head, how to raise geese...since I've never had them before.

Good luck with the geeses. I've considered it but to much work.

Chickens were surprised at the snow. Especially those in the Del run. Came out and walked near the back of the run where there was no snow.

The orp run has snow all over the feeders, so I had to shake that off.

I am concerned about the plastic I have cuz it's not new. Plastic dries out and breaks into small pieces and I don't want a repeat of this year. I'll use what I have but next year buy fresh in the fall. Still I'm hesitant to put any up because it's sure to get warm again.

The thing is, if I put down shavings and straw it will get wet and that means more after the plastic goes up. What to do.
