Is there a Duckitis? Similar to that of chickens?
good morning all, snowing pretty good here, with a sheet of ice under it, be careful everyone!
It is freezing out there and snowing again of course. I just had to go out and place a hook/latch on the chicken coop to keep it from slamming shut in the wind. The chickens have been going out into the snow this year more and more so I hate to leave that door closed or go out and find out it shut from the wind. The more they are out the better!
JLaw - I'm with ya on wanting hatching eggs but I would be leary of having them shipped. I'm waiting on my ducks to start laying and even then, I may have to wait for them to be fertile. I keep reading about all these people who ordered hatching eggs but the hatch rate was lower due to them being shipped and I'm sure the weather doesn't help either. No one out your way has runners?
I'm waiting on mine to lay, I did see them tho. However if JLaw wants pure runner eggs I'm sure he's getting in touch with the people selling them to see how they are housed. I just took a look at the ad on ebay listed by someone from FL and it says she keeps her KCs and Runners together. I would be nervous about getting mixes if I was looking for purebreds.Have you posted on CL for duck eggs? I have seen them posted on Ebay.
Anyone got pic of a coop specifically for ducks?
Quote: In the begining when I got my first 2 I kept them in the chicken coop with the chickens untill I finished the duck hut...Then after my one got killed I moved Craig back into the chicken coop at night. I put in my large plastic dog crate with some straw in it and he would go in and stay in there. They are fine in there.![]()
Rancher - This is my rebuilt Duck Hut. It still needs a little work. I need to cut out the windows and fix the back so that I can clean it out, but you can get the idea. It is just a simple house. There isn't a bottom. I put straw in it.Have you posted on CL for duck eggs? I have seen them posted on Ebay.

The nice thing about my set up is that they live together! The chickens will go in the duck hut and scratch up the straw so that it stays mixed up and it helps to keep down on the mess. I was wondering what everyone was talking about when they said that the ducks were messier...I think that with the chickens and the ducks living together it works out better.. I hate to be an enabler
I'm thinking of taking the bottom tray out of mine and just throwing some hay in there on the ground. It would be much easier for me to tip mine over like you mentioned you do with yours and rake out the dirty hay tip it back over and throw more in. My house has little 1-2 inch legs on it though so I would want to saw those off I think so it sits flush on the ground. Maybe not, who knows, we'll see LOL Guess it depends on how much hay I throw in there.Rancher - This is my rebuilt Duck Hut. It still needs a little work.
